Ellis Island opened in 1892, long after the largest wave of Irish immigration (1840-1870). There was still significant Irish immigration up until the early 1990s, but the biggest wave was pre-Ellis Island.
The main immigration processing station in New York prior to 1892 was Castle Garden, which was near where the Staten Island Ferry terminal stands today.

That makes sense, mid 1840’s the potatoe famine.
Didn’t Ellis Island become the entry process center because it was an isloated island and immigrants needed x-rays etc to show no exposure to TB.
Plus during my dads period of time, you needed a sponsor, a job and a residence and all had to be proved.
An immigrant couldn’t be a fiscal burden on society.
