Ellis Island opened in 1892, long after the largest wave of Irish immigration (1840-1870).

That makes sense, mid 1840’s the potatoe famine.
Didn’t Ellis Island become the entry process center because it was an isloated island and immigrants needed x-rays etc to show no exposure to TB.
Plus during my dads period of time, you needed a sponsor, a job and a residence and all had to be proved.
An immigrant couldn’t be a fiscal burden on society.

Correct.

Now, of course, we harass Colombian bankers and Filipino nurses, while just looking the other way at the dishwashers and gangsters coming from (usually southern) Mexico. If that's not discrimination (or stupidity) I don't know what is.

We are on the same page Mike.

One thing few Americans know is about 1/2 of all the immigrants that came to America left and returned home when they could not “make it” here.

There was no “safety net” except their sponsors. There was no welfare or medicare .

Think about it, the people that built America were the survivors, the ones willing to risk everything to come here and that had the ability, the skills and the intelligence to make it in a foreign land with a different language.

Today we get the freeloaders that come wanting to live in our safety net.

That does not bode well for this nations future
