Actor Thompson says he'll run for U.S. president

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hollywood actor Fred Thompson said in an interview that he plans to run for U.S. president in 2008, joining a crowded field of Republican candidates.

"I can't remember exactly the point I said, 'I'm going to do this,'" Thompson said of his planned presidential run in Thursday's edition of USA Today.

"But when I did, the thing that occurred to me: 'I'm going to tell people that I am thinking about it and see what kind of reaction I get to it.'"

Thompson, a 64-year-old social conservative, said he was planning a campaign that will use blogs, video posts and other Internet innovations to reach voters turned off by "politics-as-usual" in both parties, USA Today said.

On Wednesday, a long-time friend and political adviser said Thompson had tentatively decided to run for president and that he has quit his role on the TV crime series "Law & Order."

"His mind is made up to run if interest continues to be as intense as it is," Tom Ingram said in a telephone interview.

Thompson, who won election twice as a Republican senator from Tennessee, will now begin raising money to gauge support, added Ingram, who serves as chief of staff to Sen. Lamar Alexander, also a Tennessee Republican.

Late on Wednesday, "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf said Thompson had asked to leave the show where he has played New York District Attorney Arthur Branch for five seasons.

Think Perot. He had lots of money but spent relatively little of it. Suddenly he was as hot as a pistol and began to draw huge support. Harder for Thompson, but since he is really competing with only three or four others, the field is not as crowded as it seems.

Then the President should sign the Immigration Bill into law.

The implications of such an act are unfathomable. It would lower the wages of today's resident illegal at least $2 bucks an hour. And, that's if you're not paying under the table.

Build the wall, raise the wages, cut the operating costs.

That’s an understatement... I was referring to noobreb’s comment. BTW I supported Thompson before supporting Thompson was “cool”. Probably the first on FR. Jim R. could do a search.

I do not think we, as a country, should go for simple name recognition and flashy packaging.

Oh man, if you get your wish, Wall Street is dead. But I agree- we musn't 'go for' name recognition and flashy packaging. The only packaging we need to respect is that upon which our country was founded. Probably written with a goose or duck quill. Imagine that.

AFLAC!!!

President Bush will sign it into law whether I, you or anyone else wants amnesty for illegals or not.

The 2006 election cleared the way for this shamnesty immigration bill.

I don't like his Internet idea. Let's ask Howard Dean if the netroots gave him the nomination in 2004. Conventional wisdom at the time said he was unstoppable. Then he went up in flames in Iowa.

Dean failed Dean (specifically, the "I have a scream" speech), not the internet. His idea of using the 'net for fundraising and organizing was pretty sound, actually -- Dean was just an awful candidate.

Fred is like E.F. Hutton-when he talks, people listen.

He really does have that quality. But is it enough? I guess we'll find out.

In the end, he has to build the ground organization, get support from elected Republicans, get the base voters and key business groups, build a fundraising network, just like any other GOP candidate will.

He can start as an unconventional candidate but he has to become a standard partisan candidate just like anyone else in order to win the nomination and the White House.

If anything, Fred should get a couple of smart techies and turn them loose on coming up with as many different surprising and unexpected ways to raise money and support as they can conjure up.

By contrast, I think of the embarassment for conservatives, when Clinton walked into the White House in 1993 only to discover virtually no computers, but lots and lots of typewriters. The rest of world had been using PCs for 10 years. Talking about being behind the curve and out of it altogether.

So, let’s not leave techie smarts to the liberal psychos.
