WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hollywood actor Fred Thompson said in an interview that he plans to run for U.S. president in 2008, joining a crowded field of Republican candidates.
"I can't remember exactly the point I said, 'I'm going to do this,'" Thompson said of his planned presidential run in Thursday's edition of USA Today.
"But when I did, the thing that occurred to me: 'I'm going to tell people that I am thinking about it and see what kind of reaction I get to it.'"
Thompson, a 64-year-old social conservative, said he was planning a campaign that will use blogs, video posts and other Internet innovations to reach voters turned off by "politics-as-usual" in both parties, USA Today said.
On Wednesday, a long-time friend and political adviser said Thompson had tentatively decided to run for president and that he has quit his role on the TV crime series "Law & Order."
"His mind is made up to run if interest continues to be as intense as it is," Tom Ingram said in a telephone interview.
Thompson, who won election twice as a Republican senator from Tennessee, will now begin raising money to gauge support, added Ingram, who serves as chief of staff to Sen. Lamar Alexander, also a Tennessee Republican.
Late on Wednesday, "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf said Thompson had asked to leave the show where he has played New York District Attorney Arthur Branch for five seasons.

His demeanor is similiar to Washington’s....he’s doing it out of duty, and respect that.
Don't overlook the fact that Howard Dean was a psychotic idiot.
It's early, but it doesn't seem that Thompson shares that ailment.
I don't think the Internet had anything to do with Dean's "moment" in Iowa.

2008 isn’t 2004. The internet is maturing.
Just as candidates in early years won because they were the first to master television, so will those who are the first to master the internet. Indeed, in this, Dean pointed the way.
But, in 2008, technologies - particularly online video and social networking sites - which were in their infancy in 2004 have reached maturity.
He has 30,000 volunteers, without any active recruiting. He has several million dollars in just a couple days, and commitments for $5 million more.
I really don’t see a problem here.

A presidential campaign needs a good candidate (including experience, prestige, charisma) with a good message.
Money follows good candidates. Organization is a matter of putting the right people in charge of the campaign, but is hugely multiplied by: candidate and message.
I don't know what fool started this whole money-organization CW but it's putting the cart before the horse.

You’re right. Easy come, easy go. There is nothing easy about a winning presidential campaign, including a campaign for the nomination. I’m getting the whiff of hot air here.
Oh I don’t think Fred has to worry about money. When he announces, he’ll have folks throwing it at him from all over this country!

You’re right that the candidate is the most important thing, but still, he’ll get nowhere without money and organization.
