Teamsters foaming over ejection at Yuengling (new favorite brew alert!)

POTTSVILLE, Pa. -- Dick Yuengling Jr., fifth-generation owner of the brewery that bears his name, called his employees together a few weeks before their labor contract was set to expire to talk about the future of the business.

"Read between the lines," he told them at one point, according to government documents on the management-union feud that followed.

Depending upon whom you ask, Mr. Yuengling's speech was either a pep talk to urge employees to work harder or an ultimatum to dump the Teamsters union, which is what they did.

The union has been trying to strike back, urging a boycott of the 178-year-old brewery's product. The company says the effort has fallen flat -- with "absolutely zero feedback" from the marketplace, according to Chief Operating Officer David Casinelli.

Now, the Teamsters say they are going to try to get state lawmakers to intervene in what they say has been an unfair fight.

It is also a darn good beer.

I wouldn't go that far. It's OK, especially considering that it is $2 - $3 per six pack cheaper than the "premium" brands.

We live near Latrobe now and we can get the whole range of offerings through our distributor here.

The local beer, Rolling Rock, has been taken over by Anheuser-Busch and is now made in New Jersey.

Funny, just this weekend I was thinking how Budweiser keeps bringing out products like Yuenglings as I sipped my Black and Tan.

This thought, with the news that Earnhardt (in the Budweiser Car)was leaving DEI racing seemed to combine into:
Yuengling should make a deal with Earnhardt and Childress Racing to bring back the Black (with some tan on top)#3 car that his Dad drove.

The Yuengling Brewery is a regional brewer that has manufacturing plants in Pottsville, PA and Tampa, FL. Currently we distribute our products over a ten state area along the eastern seaboard. ADDING VALUE!!! The ONLY reason they needed. I have never heard or read the reason for or against a union summed up in THOSE 2 words.

I prefer this gem from the Union thug:

“Pottsville’s a very small town, and the Yuengling brewery’s the only game in town. So there was great pressure from the people of Pottsville to not say anything,” said Daniel Grace, head of Local 830.”

He doesn’t see the irony of his statement. Having run every other business out of town (and failed to attract any new ones), he grouses that the last one remaining has thrown him and his worthless union out on their posteriors.

My experience with the teamsters is that they don’t care a damn about how much I make. The teamsters just want more dues paying members. My teamster negotiated contract calls for no overtime pay regardless of how many hours I work (commission based). My company wants to hire a part time employee to cut my hours (same commission pay). The teamsters have no problem with this as long as the 10 hour a week part timer pays his $325. initiation fee and $42. a month in dues. Of course no one will take this job a I continue to work an extra ten hours a week for nothing but the honor of being in the f’n teamsters!

You are so right. I used to be VP of Mfg for Quaker Maid down the road from Pottsville. We had Teamsters as our union. At least until Quaker Maid went belly up, was closed, and the name sold to a NY firm. Those 300 Teamsters sure showed Quaker Maid who was boss. A six week strike (which started before my arrival) sure helps the sales effort.

In a full disclosure effort; the management team prior to my arrival sucked. I have never seen a more divided company. Six months later and I was gone. Good managers screwed by the union, good employees screwed by the union, a good company screwed over by poor managers.
