Pretty lame IMHO. Over 30 states permit first cousins to marry. The rate of mental defects in children born to first cousin parents is nearly the same as that of children born to unrelated parents.
Bad parenting, not bad genes.

My impression was that the marriage of first cousins was once fairly common among immigrant families. As the families became more assimilated, these marriages were sometimes cause for embarassment.
A number of prominent people, including psychologist Abraham Maslow, were the products of first cousin marriages.
