Preview of Carl Bernstein's Bio on Hillary Clinton
Editor & Publisher ^ | May 29, 2007

The much-awaited biography of Hillary Clinton by Carl Bernstein closes with the observation that the U.S. senator, former First Lady and current candidate for president, “has continued to speak from the protective shell of her own making,” and in doing so, “has misrepresented not just facts but often her essential self…

“Almost always, Hillary has stood for good things. Yet there is a disconnect between her convictions and words, and her actions. That is where Hillary disappoints. But the jury is still out.”

E&P today received a copy of the 628-page book, “A Woman in Charge,” which is to be published by Alfred A. Knopf next week. Bernstein, the famed Watergate reporter and author of several other books, lists nearly 100 interviews conducted for this one.

While Bernstein declares that Clinton is “neither the demon of the right’s perception, nor a feminist saint,” critics of the senator from New York are sure to find plenty to bolster some of their views. Bernstein, for example, writes flatly, “Since her Arkansas years, Hillary Rodham Clinton has always had a difficult relationship with the truth.” Yet he adds: “She is hardly different from most conventional politicians in that regard.”

Bernstein quotes an unnamed former White House aide: “I don’t know how anything in her life can be deep or honest because she’s tied herself in to stay with Bill…So everything is seen from this kind of warped perspective, in a way. She can no longer be honest about what she actually feels, so it is hard to know if she’s being honest about what she says she thinks.”

The Lewinsky affair does not fully arrive in the book until nearly 500 pages into it.

I think Bernstein is trying to 1) put a layer of icing on a cow chip, 2) set Her Majesty up for the "it's nothing but old news" defense when the Clinton years come into clearer focus toward the end of the 2008 campaign, and 3) make a bunch of money for Carl in the process. Nevertheless, it is always fun to watch the liberal snake eat its own tail.

Almost always, Hillary has stood for good things.

Oh, really?

Spend your money on Tony Dungy’s bio, Quiet Strength, instead. It comes out July 10. www.coachdungy.com

“Bernstein suggests that future historians will come to describe the White House years of 1993-2000 as a “co-presidency.”

Try codependent presidency.

Brilliant. If there was ever an understatement about her, this is it. If this translates to the facts that she is hateful, deceitful, a pathological liar, a criminal, a Marxist-socialist, obsessed with power and control, a USA and military hater, a panderer to our enemies, and TOTALLY UNQUALIFIED to be President and totally morally bankrupt....then I would agree.

I agree with #3 only. I see this as an attempt to push Hillary leftward, her buddies see Obama doing some real damage on that flank, and they want to protect her from herself. They know that she has to pretend that she’s a centerist to win a general election, but they want to make sure she wins that nomination first.

Coach Dungy has a great story. His father was a Tuskegee airman. Dungy didn’t find out his dad was a Tuskegee airman until the day of his funeral.

Both of Coach Dungy’s parents were educators. His sister is a doctor, his brother a dentist, and another sister is a nurse at a detention facility. Remarkable man and family.

I’m just trying to really push his book because he stands for everything the MSM doesn’t so hearing about it in those avenues will be few and far between.

Spot on. Bernstein is just “taking out the trash” for HRC. Tomorrow it’ll be “nothing new here...let’s just moveon.org”

As for Lewinsky, "In spite of the fact she had been lied to, it took Hillary less than two days to correctly figure out how events would proceed."

I must be 86,000 times smarter than H!, since it took me less than 2 seconds.

“Since her Arkansas years, Hillary Rodham Clinton has always had a difficult relationship with the truth.”

You can have a pretty wholesome ‘relationship’ with the truth if you first and foremost admit that such a thing exists

Rumor has it that one of Hillary’s “girlfriends” is coming out with a book too. We shall see.

Do we get the feeling that all the authors are trying to get a book about Mrs. Clinton RIGHT NOW while there is still a market for such a thing? When this whole dirty fight is over, I believe she will be yesterday’s dried up, rancid toast. Won’t be able to sell books then - no one will care (buy). And where did they get that God-awful picture shown in your post?

If that’s true, it could get REAL interesting.

Report that HRC FAILED the DC bar so moved to Arkansas to take the easier test.

I wonder what part of the DC bar gave her the most trouble: criminal law, constitutional law or federal income tax?

My guess was all three, and on the Arkansas bar exam as well, but she made extra credit points on the real estate law section!

But the jury is still out

The jury is still out? She's been in the public sector virtually her entire working life and has quite the track record. But the jury is stil out? Guess Bernstein doesn't think the jury will come in till the end of her second term!
