You may want to put that soda can down.

A common preservative found in drinks such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Fanta and Diet Pepsi may cause serious cell damage, according to a report in Britain's The Independent.  Sodium benzoate has the ability to switch off vital parts of a person's DNA, according to research from a British university.  The problem is usually associated with aging and alcohol abuse, but new findings show that drinking soda with the preservative can eventually lead to of the liver and degenerative diseases such as .

Sodium benzoate, which derives from benzoic acid, has been used for years by the carbonated drinks industry to prevent mold from developing in soft drinks. The ingredient has been the subject of concern on cancer, because when mixed with Vitamin C, it turns into a carcinogenic substance called benzene, the Independent reported.  Last year, a Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks found high levels in four brands that were removed from store shelves.    "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it: they knock it out altogether," said Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology.

You’re on crack bud. Canned goods keep for a couple of DECADES if not more. Just because the silly soda companies put an expiration date on the bottom of the can doesn’t mean anything except they are trying to coerce you into buying a new can.

It’s really simple to tell when canned goods have gone bad...the bad ones blow up...sometimes literally. If the ends of the cans aren’t bulged out, it’s fine.

Next your going to tell me that grain and seed goes bad. Or pickles.

btw, I’ve eaten food from cans so old the labels rotted off and the cans were covered in rust. The only way to know what was in them was to open them up and taste.

It's you on crack. I have considerable professional experience.

I was in business for several years packing and distributing freeze dried and other food items, and was well known in my part of the country in the survival goods area. Earlier, I had a senior position with one of the largest frozen food packers in the world and worked two doors down from the tasting lab.

Why the hell do you think all the soft drinks have expiration dates, fool??? -- because the manufacturer doesn't want you to have a bad experience and be turned off from the brand.

If you are incapable of detecting the change in taste, unless the "can is so old the labels rotted off and the cans were covered in rust", I would get up off your walker, take off your oxygen mask, and ask the nearest geriatric nurse to validate the contents.

You also, quite simply, fail to distinguish between chemical changes affecting taste and biological contaminants affecting safety.

Well, it didn’t work. I preferred the taste of the 10 year old coke. So if what you are saying is correct(and i doubt it is) then I should keep a wine cellar full of coke and only drink it once it reaches minimum 10year maturity...givin my flavor preferrences. Ha! Like I’m gonna do all that for a stupid can of soda.

Well, what about the seeds grains and pickles then, mr expert? Come on, show us how smart you are.

My wife and I were just watching “The Queen.” The Queen Mother lived to be more than 100 and I dare say, that barring some crash in her health, that the Queen will live that long, too. One thing that Mirren did not try was to get up on a horse. Elizabeth is an excellent horsewoman, and very outdoorsy, so the lifestyle and the genes should push her over the century mark. Her son, if he ever ascends the throne, will be very old.
