Easy there, Big Fella! (exuberant cheerleader re: GW, his exuberance gets the best of him)

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an exuberant cheerleader for his policies to fight global warming. At times, unfortunately, his exuberance gets the best of him.

A recent example is a May 18 speech he delivered to the International Low Carbon Fuel Symposium at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. During the speech, Schwarzenegger claimed that development of ethanol and other biofuels could help reduce gas prices, which now average about $3.45 a gallon in California.

"The Low Carbon Fuel Standard is our best weapon against rising oil prices and gas prices because a vibrant market in alternative fuels and alternative vehicles, alternative engines, gives customers a great choice," the governor said. "That empowers the customers, of course, to say no to those high fuel prices, to say, 'Hasta la vista, baby.' "

There is little doubt that California and other governments need to explore the potential of alternative vehicles and "biofuels." If manufactured from crops that don't require a large consumption of energy -- forget corn and soybeans -- such fuels could help reduce outputs of carbon dioxide, one of the man-made gases that is contributing to global warming.

--snip--

Currently, the United States consumes about 139 billion gallons of gasoline yearly. Since standard vehicles are currently designed to burn about 10 percent ethanol in their fuel mix, there now is a market capacity for about 14 billion gallons of ethanol each year.

Even with new ethanol plants under construction, economists say the United States probably won't reach a production level of 14 billion gallons until well after 2010. ...

The hard facts are that, absent the construction of more refineries on the West Coast, the only long-term solution to high gas prices is reduced consumption.

The ONLY solution? Seems to me Scrotumento Bee has disregarded the supply side of the fuel equation. How about higher gasoline production (refinement) as a solution to higher gas prices? sheesh

They used to be happy with gasoline refining so long as it was done far away...now they don’t want it done anywhere.

Read the statement again.... it said “long-term”...

Refining more of a limited non-renewable resource is not a long-term solution to prices, as the supply side can’t be increased long-term. It requires alternatives or reduction of consumption (demand).

We had a CA commission refuse to support our grant application for a small biomass unit to heat our high school because it “had emissions that would affect air quality.” Now scrubbers and looped systems have reduced emissions to negligible or zero standards, but the enviros have this thing against burning wood chips and preconceived notions that can’t be changed.

We have an horrendous and dangerous situation in the north state with fuel build ups in the forest from years of heavy restrictions on any harvest, coupled with fire supression. Biomass utilization (a renewable energy) is one way to economically offset the costs of fuel reduction. So is commercial utilization of small diameter wood in pole frame and other building. The state has a bias against biomass and is tightening building standards come next year to limit the amount of wood that can be used in building to reduce the likelihood a house will burn. Shortsighted policies.

I hope they will not be as shortsighted in supporting cellulose technologies that can turn forest thinings into ethanol. The supply is already there and needing to be harvested for safety sake. This is a win/win.

???
The Sac said that in the same sentence you excerpted....

"The hard facts are that, absent the construction of more refineries on the West Coast, the only long-term solution to high gas prices is reduced consumption."

We had a CA commission refuse to support our grant application.... etc.

It's all about the money. In a place as Democrat and corrupt as Kalifornia, somebody's palm always needs to be greased. The alleged reasoning stated for turning down your application is boilerplate nonsense. With scumbag politicians (and "commissions", etc.), it's ALWAYS about the money. Just find a way to get a piece of the "grant" back into the campaign coffers of somebody who is "connected", and you're in business.

Regards,
LH

Why is anyone surprised at Arnold and his antics? He sleeps with a Kennedy and has fathered her children for Pete’s Sake! His soul is sold.

Of course, that would require a proven old-school forestry management approach, vs. the current Gaea worship approach.

My bad...thought they were referring to BIO-fuel refineries.
