BAGHDAD - U.S. and Iraqi troops raided Sadr City on Sunday, targeting Shiite insurgent cells in the Baghdad slum for a second day, while British forces stepped up pressure on Shiite militants in the southern city of Basra.
Meanwhile, in Kut, 100 miles southeast of Baghdad, 70 police officers resigned Sunday morning and handed over their weapons. Police said they cited their fears of being targeted by anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militants.

well there is your problem
How about just level the whole thing? We tear down housing projects all the time.
The longer we allow him to live, the harder the job will be for the troops.
While he's no strategic genius, he is a uniting cog for resistance and iranian intervention. Publicly eliminate him, take credit for it and show him no mercy.
Now there's an idea for snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. And that is precisely why the Democrats can't let it happen.
Someone has to give Sadr a brand new 500 series Mercedes car bomb.
medium yield nuke would be just fine.
IMO; that is the kind of thinking that has prolonged this war, it assumes that they all think like we do, and they don’t
You are correct in your assessment of the situation. The only thing they understand is what my Grandfather understood about discipling his mule; namely, a pi$$ elm club between the eyes....then the mule and him had a coversation!!
Why can’t we just make a few parking lots and end it all.
And BTW, why must American taxpayers pay to rebuild oil-rich Iraq? They tore it down, let them rebuild it.
Here is a program for withdrawal:
1. Secure the oilfields and operate them under a U.S. protectorate.
2. Pull all U.S. troops out of Iraq and bring them home to guard U. S. borders.
3. Let Iraq determine its own type of government and economy.
4. Begin a crass “Manhattan-like” project to developer energy independence at home.
5. Use tactical nuclear weapons on any country suspect of making or helping to make a terrorist attack on the U. S.
Earlier this week it was reported that the Brits killed Sadr’s “top military commander” in some kind of shootout in Basra.
The reported circumstances seemed odd (they went to a mosque after Friday prayers to “apprehend” him?), so I poked around and discovered that the SAS Task Force Black is thought to operate out of Basra.
TF Black is part of Joint Special Operations Command Task Force 77, which under other names (TF 145, TF 121) has been responsible for (1) finding and targeting Zarqawi; (2) finding and targeting Usay and Kuday; (3) finding and capturing Saddam. You might recall that in all the foregoing, the JSOC Task Force was *not* credited with the operation. In (1) MNF-I repeatedly said that special operators were not on the ground, that Zarqawi had been turned-in by someone; in (2) and (3) it was similarly stated that they had been turned-in for the reward.
The point here is that this week’s attempt to “apprehend” Sadr’s military commander would not likely have been done by your average British enlistee, especially under the circumstances that were reported. It looks very much like your standard Task Force 77 operation.
So I’d hope and guess that Sadr is very much on the target list and in their crosshairs.
Don’t be surprised when they try to “apprehend” him this week or next.
In WW2 we would have levelled Sadr City. That would have been the end of that problem.
Today, instead of destroying the enemy stronghold, we allow the enemy leader to mouth off endlessly, RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. We REFUSE to kill the enemy leader for flimsy PC and political reasons. He OPENLY encourages his people to kill our guys, RIGHT IN FRONT OF US, and we don’t lift a finger to stop him.
PC is getting our guys killed in Iraq and frankly I blame GWB and the rat infested State Dept.
Just my 2 cents. Fire away.
Besides exacerbating all problems and being unconstitutional (#2), I like your plan!
only muslims could celebrate killing innocent civilians by blowing up yourself at the same time as a martyr
Agreed. In ten years, when he is Ayatollah of Iraq, we are really going to regret not killing Al Sadr. That’s what happens when you let a Soviet expert/former provost of Stanford run the State Department. The Peter Principle at work.
there was a reason saddam had the secret police
you cant plant ied/s against something you cant see
See my 12 above.
I’d say better than 50/50 that Sadr is not long for this world.
There will be some vague story about a “confrontation with British soldiers”.
What need for all this Mookie speculation is an Iowa market where we can put our money where our mouths’ are. I am leaning towards your point of view and would like to be net short Mookie right now.
