I’m not confident that the US being shown as taking him out is the right course..that only makes him a martyr and galvanizes his forces..better to stage the hit so it looks like an internal coup..then everyone will be looking over their shoulder and thinking they could be next...

These people know each other intimately and you're not going to fool them about anything. Better to be the "strong horse," draw firm lines in the sand, back up your words with actions reliably and decisively. If we do that, and forgo the precious western conceit of trying to wage war while dancing between the raindrops, they'll fall in line.

The martyr thing is overrated. At some point, you need to crush the opposition. Only in really rare occasions - Our Lord Jesus Christ - does a martyr not get forgotten.
