The three front-runners for the Republican presidential nomination are trying desperately to ease the suspicions among the party's hard-core conservatives that each of them arouses for different reasons.
Rudy Giuliani promised to appoint strict constructionists to the court. John McCain mended fences with the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. Mitt Romney said his past support for the right to have an abortion was wrong. While there are signs that these efforts are having varying degrees of success, many conservatives are withholding their support in hopes that somebody else emerges.
What conservatives are looking at here is a group of less-than-perfect candidates, said Lee Edwards, a historian of the conservative movement at the Heritage Foundation. A lot of them are waiting for Ronald Reagan, and there is no Ronald Reagan.
Reagan may not be available, but former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia are talking about joining the race.
Danielle Vinson, a political science professor at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., said either man could find a receptive audience in her state's crucial primary, which will be third in line behind Iowa and New Hampshire next January.
I think right now (that) if somebody else would come along in South Carolina and cut through the noise generated by the big three, they'd have a chance, Vinson said. I've heard more Republicans, especially evangelicals, expressing unhappiness with the current field.
The seven other candidates in the Republican field can boast of more solid conservative credentials, but they are attracting only isolated pockets of support because few give any of them a chance of winning.

Why, so he can suck up to people like John Kerry and glom onto their idiotic issues? Or did you mis this?
Thank’s for posting that,That debate was all I needed to see
that Gingrich is a Fraud.
I disagree. LEGAL and CONTROLLED immigration is vital to our continued success as a nation, and we need to encourage the best and brightest from all over the world to become Americans. In fact, several of the “ornamental” features and amendments our traitorous Congressbums are trying use as cover and concealment on this awful amnesty bill would be very positive, if they were not attached to this rotting, stinking corpse of an immigration bill.
I WANT more legal immigration, but with background checks, English proficiency, renunciation of previous allegiance, assimilation, and economic independence as unwaivable requirements. ANY felony committed here, including identity theft, forgery, or fraud, and ANY immigration violation should be unappealable grounds for immediate deportation and banishment.
Duncan Hunter is on CNN Wolf Blitzer now doing a great job.
From Laura Ingrahams website:

SOUNDBITE OF THE WEEK
“The world is watching our southern border, as long as they realize that it’s open. When we pass a bill that gives people the impression that there are new benefits to be had in the United States, and that’s the Senate bill, you will have a stampede for the U.S. border that will overwhelm our border forces.” Duncan Hunter
Thompson is McCain-lite. Hunter has more conservative credentials.
Of course! “Minot’? ;-)
Seriously, though, if all we have for a choice on the Republican ticket is Rudy McRomney, then I’m done being a Republican and I’ll write in Fred’s name as President and Duncan Hunter as VP (he just doesn’t have the name recognition to go far, unfortunately, though I like him a lot too)—hopefully if Fred doesn’t make the Republican ticket, then he’ll run as an Independent or even help in the formation of a new party—I’ve seen other people suggest this too, and I think it’s a great idea. Lately it’s been mighty hard to tell the Dems and Reps apart, if you know what I mean.
Exacty as planned by the stronza in the White House, along with his globalist criminal buddies.
Give me a break. Hunter voted in favor of Medicare Part D & No Child Left Behind. He doesn't know what the proper role of the federal government is.
I like Hunter but I want the fiscal conservative equation addressed too. The federal government is out of control with all these departments and agencies. What has Hunter done to limit them? When has Hunter address SS/Medicare/Medicaid?
Thompson has always believed that states & local governments know what's best. On domestic issues, Thompson is the Ron Paul of the Senate, often casting the lone dissenting vote.
....And then there is Campaign Finance reform......Fred kinda liked that one, didn’t he?
Now, about Hunter's LIBERAL fiscal voting record...
It's hard to see any of the supposed top 3 unifying the party. McCain may have the best voting record of the three but has been egregiously wrong on several important issues, and is just too old to be able to win. Giuliani is too liberal and too brittle. Romney is pretending to be a conservative now, but seems to hold conservatives in contempt--witness his remarks a while back attacking the efforts to save Terri Schiavo, and his more recent comments on homosexuals.
Never trust these guys whom just joined.
They really want to lose, don't they?

Never seen Hunt For Red October? He played Admiral Joshua Painter in that adaptation of Tom Clancy's book by the same name.
Thompson's current strategy is simple enough for a true conservative to understand, "Clean your own house, get your affairs in order, then clean their clocks on his timetable not theirs".
I believe he fully understands the battle is with the "liberal democrat moonbats, fueled by the rabid liberal press", and not with the "also rans" who decided to burn their campaigns out early pandering to the media.
Fred Thompson knew when he voted for McCain-Feingold that he was stealing our First Amendment rights, but he did it anyway.
Fred Thompson is no better than that socialist John McCain. They both had a hand in destroying the First Amendment to our Constitution and I will not be supporting either one of them.
What liberal fiscal voting record? Hunter is a patriot and he always votes with America’s best interest in mind. That’s why he supports Fair Trade with China and he also actively supports the Fair Tax.
I suppose that Fred Thompson wants to continue letting China cheat on trade, right? Is that what you think conservatives stand for?
