Planned Parenthood’s plight

Planned Parenthood’s plight

The “family planning” giant gives more details on its financial hardships. Its sponsored bills in the assembly are stalled.

“This is not a reproductive health problem. It is a public health crisis,” said a Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California “postcard” the organization sent out this month.

Under the heading, “The Tragic Facts,” the postcard said that “the current level of Medi-Cal reimbursement rates has had a drastic effect on Planned Parenthood’s ability to provide services to thousands of Californians.” In addition to claims Planned Parenthood made earlier this month that it is turning away “more than 10,000 patients a month -- 120,000 patients a year,” the postcard listed other “tragic facts”:

“ALL prenatal services at our affiliates have been either curtailed or eliminated.”

Screening for HIV, STDs, cervical cancer “and other prevetive health care services are either being curtailed” or are subject to waits of from two to four weeks.

“Many of our affiliates have laid-off clinical staff, have shuttered clinics (Six Rivers closed its clinic in Hayfork) and are unable to retain, attract and recruit doctors and other medical staff.” Staff shortages at Mar Monte, the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate, if filled, “would allow us to see 3,400 patients a month or 55,000 more patients per year!”

“Our Los Angeles affiliate estimates that they can only serve 100,000 of the 700,000 patients in their service population this year.”

Planned Parenthood has tried solve this “health crisis” legislatively, but three assembly bills sponsored by Planned Parenthood have been placed in the Assembly Appropriations Committee’s “suspense file,” meaning they are dead for this legislative season.

Two of the bills concern Medi-Cal funding. One would require all Medi-Cal programs providing family planning services to “provide comprehensive clinical family planning services” and would forbid a Medi-Cal plan from “restricting the choice of an enrollee” from selecting the Medi-Cal provider of his or her choice for family planning services. Under this bill, “comprehensive clinical family planning services” do not include abortion but do include FDA-approved contraceptive drugs and devices. Another bill would require the state Department of Health Care Services to implement a program that would make it easier for children (ages 19 and younger) to access federal funding for health services.

Though begging for more funds, Planned Parenthood affiliates in California, with one exception, seem to be enjoying be enjoying robust financial health, according to the state attorney general’s web site. (See “Pleading Poverty,” May 9 California Catholic Daily.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted Thursday, May 24, 2007 8:02 AM By Camille There is one somewhat misleading statement in this article. It concerns the Planned Parenthood bills that are "on suspense file" in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Being put on suspense merely means that the Appropriations committee has determined that there is more than $150,000 in expenses to the state contained in each of these bills. That determination of expense must be dealt with before the bills can proceed. That is why Planned Parenthood is heavily lobbying the Senate and Assembly Budget Committees and sub committees to raise the level of funding overall for Medi-Care and Medi-Cal. Once the budget is decided these bills will sail on through. We need to also lobby these Senate and Assembly Health and Human Services Budget Subcommittees to reduce the amount of funding.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted Thursday, May 24, 2007 9:20 AM By Frank Munoz Let's pray that this evil organization, Planned Parenthood, may be destroyed and never return to do it's evil deeds. California must never support any evil doer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted Thursday, May 24, 2007 12:27 PM By Margie I'd like to take some small measure of credit in contributing to the demise of this evil organization's business. All of my prolife friends do their best to suggest that PP's customers seek out another medical facility...one that does not surgically remove live babies from their mothers' wombs for the purpose of killing those children. If I have even turned away one customer from this killing center, I will be more than happy. May the Planned Barrenhood Centers crumble from nonuse!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted Thursday, May 24, 2007 1:35 PM By Paul Tarsus And they say there are no more good news stories in the media today! Perhaps Planned Parenthood should seriously consider changing their name and their mission and start promoting and supporting the culture of life and not the culture of death. The word Planned should be change to the word Protect Parenthood, to protect and promote the rights of all unborn baby children, elderly and disabled from conception to a natural death. Once Protect Parenthood starts protecting and promoting the culture of life, donations will start going way up, and they will not have a difficult time as they are now in attracting and recruiting new Doctors and other medical professionals that clearly see the severe contradictions of Planned Parenthood. Doctors and other medical professionals are taught and trained to do everything in their earthly power to protect and save life not end it in a mother's womb. "It's about the Culture of Life."

I completely agree with Coleus' statement below:
Coleus says: ...a republican, GHW Bush wrote the first title x bill, a republican president, RM Nixon, signed the first title X bill into law, and for the past 13 years, a republian congress filled with devout Catholics and evangelical Christians who accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord also have appropriated $billions to family-planning legislation, increasing the amount yearly. These so-called Christians have appropriated NOTHING to Crisis Pregnancy Centers and BILLIONS to family-planning centers. If it weren’t for the republican party, planned parenthood would have been out of business a long time ago.
