Paul Newman says he's too old for acting ("I've been doing it for 50 years. That's enough.")

NEW YORK - Paul Newman says he's given up acting.

"I'm not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to," Newman, 82, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday. "You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that's pretty much a closed book for me."

Newman, star of films such as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," added: "I've been doing it for 50 years. That's enough."

He has other plates spinning. Newman plans to focus on the Dressing Room, his new organic restaurant in Westport, Conn., and his Hole in the Wall Gang camps for critically ill children.

His Newman's Own brand of dressings, pasta sauces, popcorn and salsa has raised more than $200 million for charities.

Newman, who won an Oscar for his leading role in 1986's "The Color of Money," was last seen — or heard, rather — as the voice of Doc Hudson in the 2006 animated feature "Cars."

my stepson saw him in a movie a few years back and said, “Hey, it’s the salad dressing guy.”

That's one of the problems with growing old - you remember when you were MUCH better.

Newman will be an icon and, regardless of politics, deserves it...

So the old socialist knows when to quit.

That being said, his performance in ‘Cat On a Hot Tin Roof’ was brilliant!

Yup. Didn’t care for his politics, but for the most part, he kept it private. He is a great actor. Loved himmin “Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” just awesome.

He’s also too old for politics so maybe he’ll keep his mouth shut from now on.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward—very classy people. Wrong on politics, of course, but very classy.

Disney has kept a lot of old actors and actresses working with their animated voice characters.

Probably my favorite male actor. I disagree with his liberal politics, but that's okay. He walks his talk when it comes to donating the money he makes from profits and royalties from the Newman's Own products to charities. He has remained married to Joanne Woodward for going on 50 years, and they remain loyal to and supportive of each other.

Not many people know it, but Paul Newman is very strongly pro-nuclear energy and has spoken out in support of the Indian Point plants and the Yucca Mountain repository construction. He supports nuclear energy because he believes it is beneficial to the environment, and he is correct.

Forget all that touchy-feely stuff he’s been doing lately. Newman/Haas Racing is to date his coolest non-acting venture.
