Qaeda vows "seas of blood" over Lebanon Palestinians

DUBAI (Reuters) - A group calling itself al Qaeda's wing in the Levant vowed to carry out bombings in Lebanon and attacks on Christians unless Beirut pulled its army away from Palestinian refugee camps.

"We warn you for the last time, after which there will be nothing apart from seas of blood," said a speaker identified as the military leader of the group in a video posted on Friday by a media arm used by Islamist groups including Qaeda in Iraq.

"What we want is that you order the Christian Lebanese army to pull its men from around all Palestinian camps and the Nahr al-Bared Camp in particular," he said addressing Maronite Christian Partiarch Cadrinal Nasrallah Sfeir.

"If you do not stop we will wrench out your hearts with ... bombs," said the speaker whose face was covered with a chequered head dress and who had rifle magazines around his torso.

There have been three bomb attacks in Lebanon this week since clashes between the army and the al Qaeda-inspired Fatah al-Islam militant group erupted this week at Nahr al-Bared camp.

At least 33 soldiers and 25 militants have been killed in what is the worst internal violence since the 1975-1990 civil war. Thousands have fled the Nahr al-Bared camp, where sources say at least 11 civilians have been killed and 100 wounded.

The speaker described the army's campaign as a "brutal ... crusade under the pretext of fighting terrorism" and argued that Palestinians in Lebanon have always suffered discrimination.

The Qaeda campaign would target businesses "starting with tourism and ending with other means of making your rotten living", said the militant who did not sound Lebanese.

Addressing Sfeir, the militant said: "Leash your dogs away from our kin and stop the fire of your canons, or else... No crusader will be safe in Lebanon after today. As you hit you will be hit."

A fragile truce held between the army and Fatah al-Islam militants on Friday despite sporadic overnight clashes.

The United States and Arab allies sent military aid to Lebanon on Friday and the Lebanese army deployed extra troops to the refugee camp.

"We welcome a battle, and do not be fooled by the support of apostate Arabs to you," the militant said.

Sniper Fire Targets Exodus From Nahr al-Bared

************************************EXCERPT******************************************

Sniper fire brought to a halt on Friday the exodus of Palestinian civilians from a Palestinian refugee camp that has been gripped by clashes between Islamists and the Lebanese army, witnesses told Agence France Presse.

"They want to go out, but they are afraid of snipers," said Issa Sayed, a 49-year-old camp resident who fled the area a day after a truce took hold on Tuesday.

"They reached the bridge at around 4:00 pm (1300 GMT), but there were two shots, so they turned around," said Sayed, who was standing outside the camp in the hope that 15 of his relatives still inside would be able to leave.

His brother, Hassan Sayed, said he had called the trapped members of his family and they had told him they feared the continuing crossfire between the army and Palestinian fighters of the fringe militant group Fatah Al-Islam.

"They are too scared from the fire to dare to go out," he said.

Witnesses said few refugees managed to venture out of the battered camp on Friday.

An army officer on the scene insisted: "Anyone coming out on foot can exit without problems.

"Only entry to the camp is prohibited," said the officer, asking not to be identified.

The Lebanese army accused Fatah al-Islam fighters on Thursday of using civilians as "human shields" and warned that it would retaliate if it came under renewed fire from the militants, who declared a unilateral ceasefire on Tuesday.(AFP-Naharnet)

Easy on the French....

France Backs Army Crackdown on Fatah al-Islam

********************************EXCERPT******************************

France Backs Army Crackdown on Fatah al-Islam
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Friday that a Lebanese army decision to crush armed Islamist extremists holed in a camp in northern Lebanon in a military action would be "fair."
"We back the government and the army, let them take their decision. The decision is up to them, and if they take such a decision it would be fair," he said at a press conference before ending a two-day trip to Lebanon.

But he warned that "the consequences are always difficult to calculate."

"I hope that if they take this decision, to attack the camp, let this happen after the evacuation of as many civilians as possible, which is absolutely necessary and is already taking place," he said.

His visit comes at a time when the country's army and a tiny Islamist militant group are facing off at a refugee camp in the north of the country after three days of fighting that killed at least 78 people.

Since the clashes started on Sunday, more than half of the Nahr al-Bared camp residents have fled the shantytown to seek safe haven in nearby areas.

Kouchner, on his first trip abroad since being appointed less than a week ago, met Prime Minister Fouad Saniora, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and other political and religious officials during his stay in Lebanon.

""We warn you for the last time, after which there will be nothing apart from seas of blood,"

As opposed to what? Is there a side to al-qaeda we haven't seen before? Perhaps it would be better worded as : "If you don't stop killing terrorists in palestinian (no such thing) refuge camps we will go conpletely "by the book" Islam on you".

(like they did in the 1970's, with Jimmy Carters blessings)

More:

Japan Supports Lebanon's Stability

***************************************************

Japan said Friday it stood firmly behind Lebanon's Prime Minister Fouad Saniora in his showdown with Islamist militants holed up in a refugee camp.

Japan condemned militant groups "which threaten the stability in Lebanon" and said the country's stability was "indispensable for the peace and stability of the entire Middle East," a foreign ministry statement said.

Japan "strongly supports the efforts of Prime Minister Saniora and his government to restore public order and security and calls on all parties concerned to cooperate with their efforts," the statement said.

Saniora has vowed to crush the Al-Qaeda-inspired movement Fatah al-Islam, holed up in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared. Three days of clashes have left 78 people dead.

Saniora was to visit Japan Saturday, which is striving for a greater role in the Middle East, but cancelled the trip indefinitely due to the violence.(AFP-Naharnet)

I wish that the west would stop using the “camp” terminology. These very permanent welfare projects are now housing their third generation. “Camp” makes people think of temporary shelters as after a hurricane or flood.

The last time I looked, Lebanon belonged to the Lebanese, not the Palestinians or Al-Q. So, Al-Q, go pi@@ up and rope and then take a s##t in your hat - sorry, Rag.

The last time you looked must have been awhile ago when Lebanon was a Christian majority country.

The Muslims have driven out a sufficient number of Christians so that Labanon is now a majority Muslim country.

One of the reasons the Christians haven't been booted out is the Sunni Muslims realize the Shia will have control of Lebanon and the Sunni's are still on the fence.

Christian Lebanon is lost, and time will show that. - tom

Re: sniper fire.

Did it come from the Lebanese army or from the Al-Qaeda fighters in the camp? It would be like them to shoot at civilians to frighten them from leaving so they could hide behind them. That’s my bet.
