UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM

6:49 a.m. May 25, 2007

SAN DIEGO – A woman was run over with her own SUV outside a convenience store in Pacific Beach Thursday afternoon because of a defective parking brake, police said.

The 25-year-old woman had just gotten out of her 2005 Lexus vehicle in a 7-Eleven parking lot on Grand Avenue and Lamont Street when it started to roll backward about 1:30 p.m.

Police said she had set the parking brake before she got out, but had left the vehicle in neutral.

She tried jumping into the driver's seat to stop the vehicle from rolling, but she fell, slid under the SUV and was run over by its front tires, police said.

Traffic investigators found the SUV's parking brake to be defective.

She suffered massive internal injuries and was hospitalized.

Will the SUV be charged with assault?

Wow....Those SUV’s are the meanest pile of metal I’ve ever seen in this world. It’s amazing just how smart they are once air gets into their tires.

Assaulted by an SUV? This is routine news in today's MSM...now, it she had been "probed" by a miniature vehicle (such as a hybrid), would the headline have been worth reporting?

My take is that the hybrids are a tripping hazard, at best.

I’m having a hard time picturing this.

Intentionally? What an airhead.

Police said she had set the parking brake before she got out, but had left the vehicle in neutral.

The parking brake was fine, the driver is seriously defective. The ultimate responsibility to know the vehicle they are driving is the driver's. Period. Blonde or not.

OK. A Lexus. My cheapie 2003 car has an interlock that does not allow setting the parking brake or removing the key without first placing the gear selector in "park", an additional safety feature to prevent this sort of thing. Isn't Lexus a luxury car in the $35-$60k range?

Having said that, if the woman failed to avail herself of all the means to prevent the accident with little effort, she is ultimately responsible. Or should be.

She parked the car in neutral. Umm hmmm. I always assumed that the gear labeled “PARK” existed for some good reason.

"Defective parking brake" my eye. Cops should know by now that SUVs are sentient beings with bad intentions.

2005 Lexus vehicle in a 7-Eleven parking lot

I don't think I've ever seen a Lexus in a 7-Eleven parking lot.

The two don't really go together, do they?

Isn't it kind of like running into a gangster rapper at a baptismal font?

She did not secure the car properly before exiting. She should not be entitled to file a lawsuit and/or any money.

>> left the vehicle in neutral

In other words, the problem was isolated to faulty “wetware” in the module located between the driver’s headrest and the steering wheel.
