STAMFORD, Conn. In his second major outing as a presidential candidate in waiting, Fred Thompson spoke last night to the Connecticut Republican Party for its annual Prescott Bush awards dinner...
"We are now living in a nation that is beset by people who are suicidal maniacs," Mr. Thompson said, laying into the recent proposed compromise, engineered by Senator McCain, that would provide legal status to millions of currently illegal immigrants while ostensibly strengthening border enforcement. "We're sitting here now with essentially open borders."
"They don't get it that putting it on a piece of paper anymore, even passing it into law, does not convince the American people that they will do what they say they're going to do," Mr. Thompson thundered.
And... he had much harsher words for the Democrats on the war in Iraq. "We look at our friends on the Democratic side who have clearly decided not what is best for their country, but what is best for the Democratic Party, and how they might get additional votes in future elections," he said.
"Our choice is where we will fight," Mr. Thompson said, echoing President Bush's familiar line about fighting the terrorists there, so as not to have to fight them here. All the Democrats want to debate, he said, is "the date of our surrender."
Agree or disagree, these were the words of a man ready for a fight. If folks weren't ready to believe it after Orange County, they should be after Stamford.
Talking to a likely Thompson staffer ahead of the speech, I said I hoped he'd get in the race and shake things up. The staffer said, coyly, "I think you'll get your wish." I didn't push for a date and time. But this guy's ready to go for it.

I’ll vote for Duncan or Fred (if he runs),because either one sounds better for America than all the rest.
I don’t think Duncan or Fred will stop the rot,but I’ll vote.
I do think when it starts to look like either one will win he had better have GOOD security.
If a small town sheriff will murder his rival, what would a
rich, powerful, elitist,(who belives he/she is the smartest person on the earth)presidential candidate/supporter do?
Just my humble opinion.
Have you got a favorite or two in mind?
“He should state he is running”
Why should he state that he is running?
I tend to lean towards principle, I like Hunter.
You owe Captainpaintball an apology.
I watched the Orange County speech--it was webcast. Thompson deviated vastly from the written version you linked to and talked about much more than is included there. That is not a transcript, but prepared remarks published before the event.
The video is available on youtube in four parts (about 35 minutes in total)
You will note in Part 2, at about the 6 minute and 30 second mark, Thompson says exacly what CPB says he did.
Do you even understand Equal Time rules? I find them stupid myself, but that’s what is looming until his movie airs on Sunday. You’re digging yourself a hole. The first step, of course, is to stop digging.
I don’t understand your analogy and/or sarcasm.
But enough about the Democrats.
Do you know the answer to that?
I'm just thrilled that there is someone who has done something OTHER than politics who is interested in running for President. Makes for a much more interesting person.
I have no problem with someone being honest enough to finish one job, and fulfill his obligations, before he starts another.
Be patient. Fred has some NBC contract obligations he must fulfill before he can formally announce. He is going as far as he can go right now without violating FEC rules. He may look like he is riding on the fence of indecision, but he is doing what he can and keeping himself out before the public.
I like Hunter too. He’d make a great running-mate for Hunter. I’d love to see him take it to someone like Ray Mabus or Evan Bayh in the debate.
LOL! You are correct sir!
Now I'm not real sure that any of those appearance would actually trigger the Equal Time rule, but even if they didn't, there would be enough mewling about it in the press that whatever truth was there would be lost in the noise.
Once Fred Thompson declares, the Equal Time rules, whatever they are, begin to take effect. Many of us believe that he's finishing up his contracts so that when he does declare, it doesn't cause problems for his employer, and then he's free to do all of the campaigning stuff he can't do right now as part of his contract.
Your post made me :) !!!
BS!
Are you kidding?
He knows.
It is how the game is played.
Oops. I meant the inverse actually. Though either of those men at the top of the ticket would make me happy. I doubt Fred would go through all this to be number 2 though.
"conveniently" As in, a "conveniently" absurd eight months ahead of the first primary?
"avoided" As in, "avoided" by the actual voters watching the Spurs and planning their Memorial Day getaway?
"early debates" As in, "early debates" that could only possibly satisfy overpreening politics junkies like Chrissy?
