Fred Thompson Goes Nutmeg
The New York Sun ^ | May 25, 2007 | Ryan Sager

STAMFORD, Conn. — In his second major outing as a presidential candidate in waiting, Fred Thompson spoke last night to the Connecticut Republican Party for its annual Prescott Bush awards dinner...

"We are now living in a nation that is beset by people who are suicidal maniacs," Mr. Thompson said, laying into the recent proposed compromise, engineered by Senator McCain, that would provide legal status to millions of currently illegal immigrants while ostensibly strengthening border enforcement. "We're sitting here now with essentially open borders."

"They don't get it that putting it on a piece of paper anymore, even passing it into law, does not convince the American people that they will do what they say they're going to do," Mr. Thompson thundered.

And... he had much harsher words for the Democrats on the war in Iraq. "We look at our friends on the Democratic side who have clearly decided not what is best for their country, but what is best for the Democratic Party, and how they might get additional votes in future elections," he said.

"Our choice is where we will fight," Mr. Thompson said, echoing President Bush's familiar line about fighting the terrorists there, so as not to have to fight them here. All the Democrats want to debate, he said, is "the date of our surrender."

Agree or disagree, these were the words of a man ready for a fight. If folks weren't ready to believe it after Orange County, they should be after Stamford.

Talking to a likely Thompson staffer ahead of the speech, I said I hoped he'd get in the race and shake things up. The staffer said, coyly, "I think you'll get your wish." I didn't push for a date and time. But this guy's ready to go for it.

I guess you are right, here is the immigration quote;

“”The government could start by securing our nation’s borders. A sovereign nation that can’t do that is not a sovereign nation. This is secondarily an immigration issue. It’s primarily a national security issue. We were told twenty years ago if we produced a comprehensive solution, we’d solve the illegal immigration problem. Twelve million illegals later, we’re being told that same thing again””

I just took a look at jellybean’s link in post 27 to Fred’s positions, they look pretty good.

All I know about the guy is that he doesn’t know whether he’s running. Indecisive could get too many people killed in the position he’s running for.

No, all you know is that YOU don't know whether he's running. He seems to be laying the groundwork, taking care to fulfill his contractual obligations with the TV show in which he stars, and the movie in which he starred, and which will air in the coming weeks. He apparently takes his obligations very seriously, and it is believed that when those have been fulfilled, he'll hit the ground running. He's already provided some good position pieces in the form of his commentary pieces on ABC radio, and as a sub for Paul Harvey.

It is not too late for him to get into the race. There have been many who have not been excited yet by ANY of the Republican candidates, so there is a lot of money and support still out there for the right person.

I’m sure they do. He’s trying to work this around his film career. I’d like it if the guy would just say he’s running before I get marginally flamed.

He avoided the debates. I would like to know some of his positions.

His positions on issues are all over FR and other places on the net. He comes out with position papers every few days and his record is easy to check. Most everyone else here has checked. BTW, I can hardly think of a worse way to find out what a candidates positions are than listening to those ersatz debates.

Yes...and notice he doesn’t call them ‘undocumented workers’ or any such nonsense! He calls them what they are — illegals!

What debates? Do you consider that farce that PMSNBC put on at the Reagan library a “debate?” The Fox News show and tell was much better, but it still was not in any real sense of the word a “debate.”

Since there will be over a dozen more of such events before January, don’t fret. You’ll get to see plenty of Fred Thompson in “debate.”

He conveniently avoided the early debates as well.

So did I, and I daresay, most Republican primary voters. It's just way too early for all this.

What do you think I’m missing about this person who has yet to state his desire to run?

And a flood it will be. Fred will flip this race on its head when he jumps in. He is the only person, in my opinion, who can beat Rudy in the primaries.

This will be the first presidential primary where I'm somewhat torn on who to vote for. (Dole was my first presidential candidate to cast a vote for back in 96...things were bad, then. heh heh)

Rudy has had my support because he has proven leadership, and he has been one of the few not to come out criticizing President Bush's handling of Iraq. He also fully understands the severity of this Sunni movement. However, he is more liberal on social issues than I am. That being said, I'm more worried about a nuke going off in a major city than Rudy's support of precedent regarding the SCOTUS' asinine decision in Roe. v Wade. Thompson, in my opinion, will show dedication to fighting these Islamic nutjobs, and will fill the conservative void that Rudy was incapable of doing.

I can very much see a Bush/Reagan type ticket coming together with Thompson picking Rudy to be his VP.
