Rudy flips gun stance
Newsday ^ | May 23, 2007 | CRAIG GORDON

KEENE, N.H. -- Rudolph Giuliani Wednesday sounded open to letting anyone who's not a criminal or mental patient carry a concealed handgun -- even telling a woman who packs a piece in New York that it's OK with him.

(snip)

Giuliani's days as a crusading anti-gun mayor are behind him now that he's running for president, and Wednesday he staked out a simple test for concealed-carry permits, which are tightly controlled in New York. He asked two questions -- Are you a criminal, and have you ever been institutionalized? -- and to the laughter of the audience, rendered his verdict when she said no to both.

"As far as I am concerned, you can have a concealed weapon," he said. "The Constitution of the United States in the Second Amendment gives you an individual right to bear arms; that individual right is as strong as your individual right to free speech, free assembly, being safe against unreasonable searches and seizures."

Outside the event, Giuliani said his test came from a recent federal court ruling overturning a tough District of Columbia gun ban, which set what he considered "reasonable" limits on gun ownership. He said he believes that individual states should decide who can carry weapons.

What I'm saying is he has no speech impediment.

He stumbles with words because he is trying to evade.

Were he guided by a moral compass, he would be confident in the right. Instead, he exhibits a desire to please everyone with words that sound right that are not written on his heart.

In short, he's a phony who is in over his head.

I’d give him credit if he showed up on the steps of New York’s state legislature, called them all gun grabbing Marxist thugs, opened his coat to show he’s carrying a matched set of revolvers and dared anyone to come and take them.

That would impress me.

So Rudy, you discovered the Second Amendment. Congratulations! Oh, one more thing:

BITE ME!

Very well said! On the mark, and likely the best argument for stopping Rudy Giuliani.

Time for Rudy to apply for a CCW.

As an important New Yorker, he may already have one.

Agreed.

GHWB flipped on abortion, so have many other GOP candidates, and they have been reliable ever since.

If Rudy has seen the light on guns I am willing to trust him. After all, he doesn’t have to pander to NYC lib gun-banners anymore, rather he now has to supplicate millions of hunters, many of whom live in battleground states.

As I've told the story MANY times here on FR, I had a carry pistol permit in NYC for 19 years (through 2 Democrat mayors) and automatically renewed every 2 years on my birthday. Rudy changed the rules when he came in, and I had to give mine up.

Do we believe him now? He cost me my licensed carry.

“Republicans in California knew exactly what they’d be getting, and they’ve got it. I’d still rather have him in there than somebody like Cruz Bustamante, for all his flaws. The reality in this state is that a true conservative cannot get elected to any statewide office. If they could, McClintock would have.”

There were many, many voices insisting that no one vote for McClintock, voices that defended Arnold and tried to say he really was a conservative, and that it was better to have a Republican as governor for the next presidential election cycle... Even WITH all these people selling out their principles to elect “the only viable candidate” McClintock still got about 20% of the vote. If Republicans hadn’t brainwashed themselves into thinking only Arnold could win, and had thrown some votes Tom’s way, he could have easily been governor instead.

I wasn’t thinking of the recall, but the last election in which McClintock ran for lt. governor and lost to Garamendi. That shouldn’t have happened but it did. I think Callifornia is lost to conservatism for now. Believe me I wish it were otherwise.

Politicians will say anything to get elected. It's their behavior in office and their track record on an issue that shows how they will really behave. Rudy's track record is anti-gun. He has done nothing to to prove otherwise. Lip service on the campaign trail doesn't cut it.

If FR is a "Conservative Forum" why are posting articles about Rudy?

Let me ask you a question Jake - and I am asking you honestly.
Seeing that FR is a "Conservative Forum" why are you defending Rudy's concept that States can decide who can carry weapons?

I have yet to meet a DOJ prosecutor who understands the second amendment as a matter of law.

(as a matter of social engineering yes, law no)

Re your post 24, I've seen some other posts by Jake the Goose and it's clear that he's carrying a torch for Mr. Giuliani a Rudybot here on FR who just won't go away.

They sure are tiresome but after February of next year, JTG and others like him will fold up their tents and be gone, likely to moveon.org or something similar.

I'm calling BS on that one. You specifically referenced Bustamante so you were very much talking about the recall. As to McClintock losing to Garamendi, that was after the state party failed to support McClintock monetarily and Schwarzenegger publicly stabbed him in the back right before election day. Conservatism isn't dead, it's just been purged from the party leadership by a bunch of trojan horse liberals who would rather have Democrats in office than conservatives.

“Out raising money.”

More like, out betraying their country.

Like anyone who would support an anti-Constitutionalist like Rudy or Hillary.

While he wasn’t a prosecutor at DOJ, Ashcroft certainly did.

I miss Ashcroft. This Yes-Man AG is... unfortunate.

Of course, any pretense to “conservatism” in the Bush White House could go after his second election. That included Ashcroft.

(1) If this was just about pandering to New York, why did he push a lawsuit to destroy the gun industry that Congress had to stop? That’s way past “above and beyond” pandering.

(2) The 2nd Amendment has squat to do with hunting.
