Montgomery County, Md. The opening of the new Shady Grove day-labor center is running both high costs and stirring debate. The controversial opening of the center, created to promote a haven for primarily undocumented immigrants to offer day labor services, is grossly over budget. As activists ask for more funding, the city council is putting their foot down.
The temporary double wide office trailers are run by the advocacy group Casa of Maryland. Day-laborers, who previously stood along route 355 in Gaithersburg, now are able to legally offer their temporary services for landscaping, construction, painting and plumbing tasks...
The projects budgeting achievements; however, are less then stellar. With a projected initial cost figured at about $45,000 dollars, and an operating cost of about $115,000, the center this year should have cost about $160,000, based on similar models in neighboring counties.
The reality of the budgeting error left the project about $111,000 over that original figure, costing the county almost twice as much. Amid this years high costs, Casa is asking for an additional $99,000 dollars to continue offering services through the center, such as English training, legal services, and a basic employment program. County Executive Isiah Leggett, facing a tightening county budget, denied the request. Leggett's spokesman Patrick Lacefield expressed that with other budgeting requests to balance, Casa may have to make due.
The County Council did settle on adding an additional $50,000 dollars to next years budget and is expected to approve the budget Thursday.

Just wow. The message seems to be:
1) They get to break federal law
2) You get to pay more and more and more local taxes
Sounds great to me.
WASHINGTON (Map, News) - A CASA of Maryland-generated handbook that instructs illegal immigrants how to handle raids is creating buzz in Montgomery County, where opponents said they are disturbed that the nonprofit agency reaps county funds for such projects.
Jessica Salsbury, an attorney for CASA, said the Know Your Rights handbooks which are available online in English and Spanish online are part of a grander plan to educate the community about the hurdles illegal and legal immigrants face upon entering the United States.
I would like to have an audit please Ike.
Chris Core is ranting about this right now on WMAL (DC).
Here’s link to CASA’s booklet that will make your blood boil.

3AngelaD - I wanted the Spanish version!
Ping the few self identified Mountgomery County Freepers. No wonder the county budget runs in the billions.
Looks like this place needs Freeping.....
I find it interesting that the “bad guys” (cops, ICE) in that CASA illegal immigrant manual are depicted as either white guys or black guys.
“When will you gringos learn, Montgomery County will soon be the new capital of Azatlan! It will soon be called Mexico County!”
After all how can we live without Jose and his six brothers who clean our pools, mow our lawns and build our houses and roads? /sarcasm off
Cheers,

“part of a grander plan to educate the community about the hurdles illegal and legal immigrants face upon entering the United States”
Who cares about the “hurdles” illegal aliens face?
That’s easy...DONT COME HERE...
CASA is not concerned about LEGAL IMMIGRANTS...just using them to make the illegal aliens appear legitimate and worthy of concern and the Maryland taxpayers money...
CASA causes a big hurdle for REAL immigrants..CASA lessens the very lives and importance of the people who chose to come to the US the right way...
REAL immigrants DONT need CASA.. they are not helpless but have every resource that American citizens have in order to get a job, training etc...I would hope that the REAL immigrants not lend their legal status to give undue credance to CASA...
$160,000? Does that county spend that much on American citizens who live there?
Yes..Im a REAL immigrant and that does “make your blood boil”.
That nonsense puts real immigrants in the mix with illegal aliens..
The raids are for illegal aliens..NOT immigrants...
REAL immigrants have nothing to fear from ice....
That should be ICE

now are able to legally offer their temporary services for landscaping, construction, painting and plumbing tasks...”
How are they able to “legally” work just because the county built a day labor center?
CASA makes it a point to not ask if they are legal. That is why so many people are ticked off about CASA getting free government money. And problem is, while they might be illegal, they might be criminals in other categories as well, and CASA is harboring them. The whole thing burns me up.
Bttt!
