Live Thread: Senate Immigration/Amnesty Debate, 5/23/05 (Grassley Amendment, Etc.)
The United States Senate (via C-Span 2) and my own peabrain

Hi Folks.
In an effort to douse disinfectant on this debate, I'll try to post a daily thread. The details of this garbage legislation, once uncovered, are mind-boggling. I'm sure the elites would much prefer we not know or discuss them.
So far the Grassley Amendment is being discussed. This amendment would dump the judicial review/appeal process of a revoked visa (in the current and new law) and make the process similar to that of a denied visa. Inotherwords, GO HOME.
Grassley pointed out that under this legislation, even terrorists can appeal a revoked visa. His argument thus far is being countered by Kennedy and Menendez, D of New Jersey. He's currently droning on and on right now...nation of immigrants...family values don't end at the Rio Grande...jobs Americans won't do...
Get the picture?

How Iowa can send both Grassley & Harkin to the US Senate is still a mystery to me...
Thank God for Chuck!!!

I'll be in and out all day - lots of errands, plus my kid needs the computer - so I hope you'll all post your thoughts and observations for the rest of us who cannot watch or listen.
I got the distinct sense today that, now that the text of this bill is finally out, many are becoming aware of what a real stinkeroo this is. Even WORSE than we thought.
Did anyone else see Chertoff get reamed by all the callers on C-Span this morning? The lipstick on the pig routine does not seem to be working for him.

Menendez is REAL big on the “family reunification” angle. Promises to propose a “series of amendments” (starting today) to “improve” the legislation in this regard.

A useful post, but “garbage legislation” is not an adequate description. I prefer John Boehner’s term, “a piece of shit.” However, that slipped out in a private meeting. He had promised Bush not to say it in public. Aside from the other damage, this POS will wreck the Social Security System just at the time the Dim boomers - who have saved nothing - are going to need it most.

I prefer John Boehners term, a piece of sh**. LOL. I heard that this morning too. Figured it might be wise to be a little more circumspect in my language, however.
(Even though I agree totally.)

Menendez is REAL big on the family reunification angle. That was the big loophole of the Immigration act of 1965. The number of family reunification visas was unlimited, and quickly led to chain immigration. This was counter to the intention of family reunification visas, which were designed to end the separation of U.S. citizens from their families.

Another FReeper posted this thread, which lists Grassley's 10 Ten Flaws with the Amnesty bill. (It's not a link, got to cut and paste.):

Absense of a quorum. As usual, nobody's there.
Oh great. According to the swimmer, after lunch "the Senator from South Carolina" will offer an amendment. That must be Lindsay Graham.
I wonder what fresh hell that will be?

AMERICA... YOUR RIGHTEOUS ANGER IS TIPPING THE SCALE!!!
We have been fighting the amnesty proposal as if the future of our country depends on our efforts... because it does. As working, voting, law-abiding, thinking Americans, we can only come to one conclusion: that those who support the Senate bill have chosen to intentionally ignore the will of the people, and have put their own political ambitions ahead of what is good for the United States of America. This agenda is unacceptable, and we have rejected it utterly. Moreover, it constitutes a direct threat to the future of this republic, because it indicates that there are members of the body politic who no longer answer to the will of the people, the Constitution, or even to rational thought itself.
Keep the pressure on, because the Senate is hoping this will all just go away if they wait long enough. Write, call, email, and fax your representatives... and DO NOT STOP. If you are unable to reach your Congressional or Senate rep, try the office of El Presidente. Contact your local and state party representatives, and the Republican and Democrat National Committees. Keep building the tidal wave that we need to KILL THIS BILL!

I had to head out to work before Chertoff came on air. However, I listened to the first half hour and the C-Span callers were actually informed and not a one supported the legislation. I don’t know how Chertoff had the nerve to face the callers.
Also, everybody is angry. Every demographic. A black male democrat called really ticked about jobs being taken from black laborers.

Just caught a few minutes of the meeting... looks like there aren’t very many senators ready to put their faces in front of a camera to support this POS.
BTW, just got my package of 500 “NO AMNESTY.” bumper stickers this morning.

Removes penalties from humanitarian workers who help illegals...
..could someone explain this?
Does that mean doctors, nurses?...
..or lay people who give them shelter & sanctuary?
