Washington — Angry Georgians on Monday continued to inundate the state's U.S. senators with phone calls and e-mails opposing the immigration compromise bill the two Republicans helped craft.
"The phones are still ringing," said Lindsay Mabry, a spokesman for Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
Chambliss, ranking member of the Senate agriculture committee, was primarily involved in negotiating provisions of the bill dealing with migrant farm workers. But the provision that has riled most callers is one that would allow existing illegal immigrants to gain citizenship relatively quickly and without being required to return to their home countries first.
Conservatives have tagged the provision "amnesty" for immigrants who broke the law. Some booed Chambliss at last weekend's state Republican convention when he tried to talk about the compromise, which sets goals for beefed-up border security that must be met before any of the other reforms can take effect.
Sen. Johnny Isakson — who originated the idea of wedding the reforms pushed by liberals with the border security concerns of conservatives — was also getting his share of the blowback.
"The vast majority of the calls we're getting are that it's a bad bill," said Joan Kirchner, spokeswoman for Isakson. "There's a lot of misinformation out there, and it's reflected in the calls."
Well, I know the DC elite read Free Republic so listen carefully: This life long Republican will not vote for either US Senator from GA again if you vote for this Immigration bill. Not a threat..... pure promise.
Does anyone still do that burning in effigy thing in this country? Sounds like Georgia would be a good place to start.
BTW folks, things like this and not cleaning our own house (Foley’s instant messages, Hastert sticking up for Jefferson and refusing to introduce reforms) are the reasons “why” people stay home and Democrats get elected in their place.
What in the sam hill do these folks expect to happen? They just signed on to selling us down the river, and then even the staffer for Chambliss says “ignorant”?

Not only have conservatives tagged it “amnesty,” but the dictionary agress with them, Also, “when he tried to talk about the compromise, which sets goals for beefed-up border security that must be met before any of the other reforms can take effect.” He is either lying or hasn’t read the damn bill. According to Sessions’ legal interpretation, which I believe, the only parts of the bill tied to “enforcement” triggers, Saxby’s GOALS, are the legal immigration provisions. The sections legalizing illegals and incorporating them into the welfare state will go into effect immediately and are NOT tied to meeting any goals, or building a fence, or the additional BP agents or anything else that might actually slow down the flow of illegals.
If they are elected or not, they are illegitimate representatives when they fail to represent the people.
Nah, we mostly don’t “do” all the PC symbolic political/entertainment crap down around here.
I called Shelby's office yesterday and the staffer I spoke to said he would be voting against the bill also.

Isakson is a country club republican. He doesn’t care what the common people think. There might be some hope for Chambliss.
I called over to bama yesterday and asked the nice lady at Jeff Sessions office a question, do ya’ll have any extra conservative backbone that you could help our two senators out with over here to Georgia? She said she would check and that she thought they had plenty and would be happy to share.

Indeed. About ten years ago, I saw a "hanging in effigy" - the image of a corrupt county clerk dangling from the flagpole in front of the county courthouse.
It's interesting - I've heard "effigy" comments several times lately from friends and co-workers. That's not a word, or a thought, that ordinarily plays across the conscious mind. Sometimes I think that it might be a good thing if the politicians pushed us just a little bit farther...

Indeed there is much “misinformation” out there Joan. There’s still some silly taxpaying Americans out there who actually believe they should have a voice in the matter.
One would think after 4 plus decades of being trampled upon, they might begin to get it.

I will vote for a damn Democrat, before I ever vote for their elitist, toadying hides, ever again. At least with a Dem, you know you have a Son of a Bitch from the start.

Yesterday I called the Georgia GOP. The woman who I spoke to went on and on about how we really don’t understand what the bill is and we need to quit being so emotional. She tried to point to some of the key legislation that Johnny Isakson had been a part of such as building a fence, 354 miles of fencing to be exact. As sweet as sugar I responsed. Ma’am, I do believe that a bill has already passed, one pushed by Duncan Hunter, that provides for 800 miles of fencing. I believe that the money is already there to pay for it and as of yet, only 11 miles of single fencing has been built, where it calls for double fencing. How is Johnny Isakson’s plan for cutting Duncan Hunter’s fence in half going to do any good? She was silent and then said that Johnny Isakson’s fence was 354 miles of fence was on top of Duncan Hunter’s fence. They don’t know what they are talking about. I asked her about the GOP going in the same direction of the Whigs or Republicans leaving the GOP. She was nasty and said then you won’t have any power. I told her the Republican’s lust for power instead of leadership and values is what has gotten them into this mess and I hoped that LaRaza will come through for them come election time.
