Thompson to Announce in July, Collamore to Head Campaign -- TPB has learned from a source close to the Draft Thompson organization that Thompson will announce he is running for President shortly after the FEC June 30 quarterly report deadline of this year. As first reported by Chris Cillizza, Tom Collamore, a former vice president of public affairs at Altria, will serve as the Campaign Manager. Collamore was involved as a undersecretary under Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush's staff and transition team.

Thompson has conservative credentials, unlike all of our frontrunners to date.

I fully agree with that assessment if you're talking about Giuliani. McCain is slightly more conservative than Giuliani, but has the downside of being legitimately insane. Romney is actually a conservative, despite what the Boston Globe wants us to believe, and I have no problem with voting for him. If Thompson turns out to be a better candidate, I'll gladly cast my vote for the man. But he has to prove it.

Is it just me, or is everyone merely projecting their own political opinions onto Fred Thompson? The guy isn’t nearly as perfect as people are claiming he is

I've maintained this for quite some time. Although I like Fred Thompson and will probably vote for him in my state's primary and will definitely vote for him if he is the nominee, I'm not sure I understand the great enthusiasm for him. If Thompson was not an actor, I doubt anyone would have been clamoring for him to run based on his Senate record. Outside of Tennessee, Thompson was best known as the Senator who did bit parts in the movies.

I am sick of people insinuating that Fred supporters are “starstruck”.

I have been watching him for over a decade. I never thought I would get a chance to vote for him. I have only ever seen him in one movie, and that was AFTER I liked him as a Senator.

So do I - like Romney.

Thompson seems moderate at best and even though he’s an actor he doesn’t seem able to convey energy and enthusiasm - comes across as old and tired - definitely like his heart isn’t in it.

But still better than Guliani and McCain.

>>>>>>>>>after the FEC June 30 quarterly report deadline

I always thought he would wait until after the deadline.
It’s better to not declare, and not report than to have to report less money than his opponents (especially on hand).

Even though he would have been fundraising for a shorter time, it would appear he had no momentum.

Now, when the September 30 deadline hits ...... let’s hope all of us who claimed he would be getting your contributions have ponied up. 8-)

I’m with you.
In fact I needed an IMDB trip to find out what he acted in.

I’m a “24” only FReeper. If he doesn’t announce, he should be playing the President with Kiefer.

Don’t you love it when people try to tell you what you believe? We know and they’ll learn. I expect most of the gnats will be the loudest supporters by November, claiming that they were “there at the begining”....heh

What is significant about the FEC June 30 quarterly report deadline of this year?

Why would he time his announcement around this? Anyone know?

Just curious... (but definitely excited by the prospect of Fred’s candidacy)

FDT understands media (re: Michael Moore, ABC Radio/Paul Harvey); is comfortable (or at least appears so) and unequivocal in his positions; like Reagan has gone around (or used) the MSM, speaking directly to the people; is a familiar face that people are generally comfortable with, and comes off as folksy rather than prepackaged and polished.

Why so late? Not that anybody pays attention in the summer, but if he wants to be serious, he has to raise serious money.

His HBO movie runs through June 28th. He owes them the right to use it for the contracted period, and if he announces before that date, they cannot run it any longer.

I'm not worried about his fundraising, he'll blow them all away by the next quarterly reporting period.

"I have only ever seen him in one movie, and that was AFTER I liked him as a Senator."

Ha! You should have seen how confused my wife was last year, we were watching a movie and there I see Fred Thompson in an acting role.

Hey, what the hell is Fred Thompson doing is a movie?"

What do you mean he's an actor?"

"He was a Senator, guess he took up acting."

"A Senator? news to me, he's in a lot of stuff."

I guess we know who watches the tele.

Same here. I don't watch "Law and Order", I got bored with it about a decade ago. I did like the episode of "Roseanne" where Fred plays her boss at Wellman Plastics, and gives her a tough time!
