Marines volunteer to return to Iraq
LA Times ^ | 5/22/07

Lt. Col. Craig Kozeniesky, the battalion commander, and Sgt. Maj. William Jordan, the senior enlisted man, assembled Marines whose enlistments were running short. Marines who were there don’t remember that Kozeniesky or Jordan spent much time speaking of the complexities of U.S. foreign policy in the 21st century. Instead, the two asked the Marines to help the battalion’s younger members.

“I just told them: ‘We’ve been together this long. We need you — the young Marines need you,’” Jordan said…

“Finally I just told them, ‘Everybody who is with us, move to the right side of the room,’ ” Jordan said. Only a handful stayed put. About 175 moved immediately to the right side.

“I was blown away,” Jordan said. “In all my years in the Marine Corps, I never saw anything like it.”

As a former Marine myself and from a family of Marines, I can say I believe this. When I graduated high school in the early eighties from a small school and our graduating class was about 165, about 20 plus male members of my graduating class joined the Marines. I still keep in touch with most of them and only (1) does not support the war. Of course he is a liberal democrat. Politics knows no bounds.

I believe it too. What I can't believe is the LA Times actually reported this.

The Battle Of The Alamo
Unsheathing his sword during a lull in the virtually incessant bombardment Colonel William Barret Travis drew a line on the ground before his battle-weary men. In a voice trembling with emotion he described the hopelessness of their plight and said, “those prepared to give their lives in freedom’s cause, come over to me.”

Without hesitation, every man, save one, crossed the line, Colonel James Bowie, stricken with pneumonia, asked that his cot be carried over.

My husband switched units to cover someone who was whining he didn’t want to go to Iraq. I am so proud of him. It doesn’t surprise me, though. Except for a small handful, Marines are always gung ho to get the job done.

Heh. I’m sure he’d find a way to say they were coerced. And then Kerry would agree and say they were Stuk in IraK. LOL

Obviously a Band of Brothers.

You simply cannot find fault with the softheartedness of our fighting men for those oppressed in foreign countries. This is almost inevitable. Put our soldiers somewhere, let them fight for the freedom of the people, and they are quickly wed to those people and their welfare.

It's the real and genuine nobility of our military tradition. And this is why Petraeus and others oppose any methods that verge on torture for interrogation. Who could wish to sully the dedication and the noble moral bearing of the American fighting man as demonstrated so clearly in this account?

These men are the pride of our armed forces.
