WASHINGTON: One in four younger U.S. Muslims say suicide bombings to defend their religion are acceptable at least in some circumstances, though most Muslim Americans overwhelmingly reject the tactic and are critical of Islamic extremism and al-Qaida, a poll says.

The survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, one of the most exhaustive ever of the country's Muslims, revealed a community that in many ways blends comfortably into society. Its largely mainstream members express nearly as much happiness with their lives and communities as the general public does, show a broad willingness to adopt American customs, and have income and education levels similar to others in the U.S.

Even so, the survey revealed noteworthy pockets of discontent.

While nearly 80 percent of U.S. Muslims say suicide bombings of civilians to defend Islam cannot be justified, 13 percent say they can be, at least rarely.

That sentiment is strongest among those younger than 30. Two percent of them say it can often be justified, 13 percent say sometimes and 11 percent say rarely.

Yes, I see those criticisms and hear their denouncements all the time. You can't turn on a TV or Radio without hearing them. /sarc

I'm still waiting for CAIR to denounce the 9/11 attacks.

The only difference between amoderate muslim and a jihadist muslim is that the latter acts on his teachings.

Only 40 percent said they believe Arab men carried out the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Is that higher or lower than Hollywierd?

This poll is would probably have about the same results in Iraq. Only about 10% or so of the Iraqis are causing the violence, the rest are just to beaten down by years of dictatorship to know they can stand up to the terrorists.

On the good side, that too is changing and more than a few Iraqis told me that a growing number of the bodies found (MSM call this ‘secular violence’) are terrorists the people of Iraq killed themselves.

I do not expect that story to be on CNN ever though... However, CNN and the rest of the MSM will be happy to keep retelling the myth of the Fallujah mosque massacre just like their terrorist allies want them to.

On the bad side, just think of what 1% of these Islamists bent on a world caliphate (Dar al Islam) with every intention of killing as many 'kuffers/kafirs' as possible can do/have done in the USA. Yet when they attack, the first thing the left wants to do is take away our means of self defense....

most Muslim Americans overwhelmingly reject the tactic

Give them time. Keep letting Wahabi clerics set up shop here and they'll come to see the wisdom of this tactic once they have to choose sides.

Let's see, if we carry that through worldwide we have 10% of 1 BILLION people that say it's justified.
That's 100 MILLION people. Let's say 1% of those people are willing to be suicide bombers.
That's 1,000,000 (1 MILLION) potential suicide bombers.

Any other religons out there that have anywhere CLOSE to that many suicide bombers?

Well, I’m not one to turn a blind eye to Muslim extremism, but these numbers are better than I would have guessed.

The use of the term “rarely” is a bit of a loaded word in polling. I could think of a situation where I would support suicide bombing to save America. What if a suicide bomber took out a terror cell that was about to blow up a city? The chance that a suicide bomber would be the best way to deal with that situation is very small, but when you throw in the term “rarely”, I might think of those possibilities.

My point is not that the United States should include suicide bombing in its arsenal of weapons. My point is that if you make someone consider every possibility, no matter how unlikely, you can get some results that seem worrisome. For example, if you asked people “could biological warfare be justified under a set of extremely unusual and dire circumstances?” you could probably get a good chunk of the population saying yes.

Yea, the more moderate ones are “back sliding Muslims”..

And that is why the fundamentalist will kill other so-called Muslims, along with us infidels.

It's one thing for Muslims to sit on their hands when a war is declared against Infidels. It is quite another to give aid and comfort to the Infidels like the Iraqis are doing in trying to form an Infidel made democratic Govt.

The fundamentalists won't have any trouble in killing Infidel collaborating Muslim heretics. - tom

That sentiment is strongest among those younger than 30.

The predictable wave of the future. In countries like France and Britain where there are now second and third generation Muslim immigrants, these "youts" are far more militant and bloodyminded than their parents were.

Muslims do not assimilate. Their religion forbids them to assimilate. They may become bad or unobservant Muslims for a while, but when something wakes them up again, watch out!
