In the emergency room at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital, Edith Isabel Rodriguez was seen as a complainer.
"Thanks a lot, officers," an emergency room nurse told Los Angeles County police who brought in Rodriguez early May 9 after finding her in front of the Willowbrook hospital yelling for help. "This is her third time here."
The 43-year-old mother of three had been released from the emergency room hours earlier, her third visit in three days for abdominal pain. She'd been given prescription medication and a doctor's appointment.
Turning to Rodriguez, the nurse said, "You have already been seen, and there is nothing we can do," according to a report by the county office of public safety, which provides security at the hospital.
Parked in the emergency room lobby in a wheelchair after police left, she fell to the floor. She lay on the linoleum, writhing in pain, for 45 minutes, as staffers worked at their desks and numerous patients looked on.
Aside from one patient who briefly checked on her condition, no one helped her. A janitor cleaned the floor around her as if she were a piece of furniture. A closed-circuit camera captured everyone's apparent indifference.
Arriving to find Rodriguez on the floor, her boyfriend unsuccessfully tried to enlist help from the medical staff and county police even a 911 dispatcher, who balked at sending rescuers to a hospital.
Alerted to the "disturbance" in the lobby, police stepped in by running Rodriguez's record. They found an outstanding warrant and prepared to take her to jail. She died before she could be put into a squad car.

That and the fact that if they bothered to click on the link, it clearly stated that she was a native Californian.
Yeah, it’s entirely implausible that a state like California, that was first colonized by the Spanish and where every major city and many towns have Spanish names, would have native-born citizens with Hispanic names.
Whether this person was illegal or not is kind of irrelevant. The fact that this hospital is drowning in Illegals without a doubt contributed to what happened to this person.
My husband is Hispanic. Puerto Rican and Brazilian. Our last name is Ryan. Back several generations ago, his Puerto Rican great grandmother married an Irish seminarian who had come to Puerto Rico to work in a Catholic Mission. The name has carried through the next 5 generations, even though there is very little Irish in their background.
Oh, I agree. It was probably possible to initially underestimate the seriousness of her condition, especially if she was perceived as a “frequent flyer” or troublesome and hysterical, but it certainly sounds as if they never went any further than that first glance. I think some medical personnel, especially in a big, busy emergency ward, probably do tend to stereotype people medically and are less attentive, depending on their perception of the patient. The hospital is definitely going to find itself sued - and losing.
It has been over ten years since I worked in a county hospital”
In the last 10 years, 20 million illegals have turned the county hospitals into their personal clinics.
Michael Moore is partly right. Medical care breaks down most fully and completely . . . . in the hellholes of liberalism, USA.
I believe your right. like they claimed those babies of the jailed illegals when those Swift companies were raided, were admitted to the hospital with pneumonia, malnutrition, etc because they were taken from their mothers. Bill O’Rielly followed up on this and it turned out not to be true. Just lies made up by the New York Times.
Your interpretation’s correct. MLK is in Willowbrook.
thiscouldbemoreconfusing: You may have a very valid point.
How in the Hell does calex59 have ANY kind of valid point????
The article states that this women was a NATIVE CALIFORNIAN.
So please in your wisdom tell me how this article was designed to "build sympathy for illegals..."??
And what in the article would make you think this persons residency was not of legal status???
Just askin.....
There is a small contingent of FReepers who want to make EVERYTHING about illegal immigration. There was an earlier post on this thread (I believe it was #18) where one of these ignorant asses stated that hospitals should refuse to treat all illegal aliens and let them die.
No one wants to go through Gall Stones pain, it is unbeable I had it one time and spent 8 days in the hospital until it queit down you have no food, nor water, only IV and antacids, I could of had pain killer but I feared addiction so I refused!
Shame on you!
You don't know that and even if is true, no child of God would let her die!
Someone higher than you is watching over all of us it should be interesting standing before the bar someday trying to justify your contempt here in the temporal area!
If you ever passed a gall stones you might remember unbeable pain!
May she rest in peace...
B S
more BS .....
I believe it.
I’ve seen nurses like that.
There’s nothing in the article suggesting she was an illegal.
My brother-in-law’s last name is “Gomez” and he’s perfectly legal...don’t make assumptions based on the last name.
I had the pleasure of sitting in an inner city ER after falling in my hotel room.
After observing the ER nurse (triage nurse) over the course of a few hours, it is easy to see how someone in that position can become hardened and callous.
All-the-same - you had a woman writhing in pain.
It doesn’t matter how irritating she is. Somebody somewhere should have helped her.
If they already knew she was having gall problems then the possibility she could develop an infection shouldn’t have been a stretch for them to consider.
“I cant imagine an ER staff just letting someone go like that.”
I can.
Easily.
