Ex-Sen. (Fred) Thompson spars with Michael Moore
MSNBC ^ | May 19, 2007 | Joel Seidman

Posted on 05/20/2007 8:11:18 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Former Sen. Fred Thompson — who says he is deciding whether to enter the 2008 presidential race and is anticipated to set up a presidential exploratory committee beginning early next month — is sparring online with documentary filmmaker Michael Moore over his new movie, “Sicko.”

Sources close to Thompson have told NBC News an exploratory announcement is imminent from the Tennessee Republican’s organization. (See First Read blog posting.)

For now Thompson, widely known for his role as District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC’s “Law and Order,” is engaging in an Internet tit-for-tat — by way of his newly released Web video — with documentary filmmaker Michael Moore over his new movie, “Sicko,” which was shot in Cuba. Thompson has sharply criticized Moore’s trip there.

Moore’s film shows survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks seeking medical care in Cuba. Moore is now under investigation by the U.S. Treasury Department for traveling to Cuba in possible violation of a U.S. economic embargo imposed on the Castro government.

The Internet battle began a few weeks ago when Thompson panned the film and the Cuba trip in the National Review, saying, “Moore’s talent for clever falsehoods has been too well documented. Simply calling his movies documentaries rather than works of fiction, I think, may be the biggest fiction of all.”

And he also attacked Moore and Hollywood, favorite targets of some GOP conservatives, “It always leaves me shaking my head when I read about some big-time actor or director going to Cuba and gushing all over Castro. And, regular as rain, they bring up the health care myth when they come home.”

This is great on so many levels: Good coverage for Fred, the smackdown of Michael Moore, and indications that Sen. Thompson is close to throwing his hat in the ring!!

And YES again! Great to see so much coverage of Fred after he very nicely put Moore in his place! I do want a president who will respond to the out-right lies and stupidity put out by the DEMS! Especially when it is done truthfully, to the point, and politely! Fred can do it so well, and I pray he runs! :)

I don’t see the point in FT spending a word on, about or with MM. Why get in the slop with the pigs?

Fred sparring with Mikey Mooron is like the NY Yankees taking on a little league club. That fat pig is so far out of his league it’s downright laughable. Fred can smell utter BS when he sees it and has not problem speaking his mind. This is one fight Mooron best bow out of before he gets clobbered in front of the entire world.

I agree 100%. I like the fact that Thompson disagrees with Moore’s positions and methods. But as a (possible) candidate for U.S. President, he should have more important things on his mind (blog). Moore’s antics, while popular with a certain segment of our society, should not be dignified with a response from the White House.

Does Fred have the charisma it takes to win? I saw part of his orange county speech and it was pretty hum drum. I like Romney alot because he has alot of charisma and is much more conservative than his detractors say.

"Why get in the slop with the pigs?"

Good internet reputation. This kind of stuff never makes it to the MSM. :-)

I do like the way FT has conducted his "campaign." He hasn't announced yet he is trashing all of the current wannabes. He's being very coy yet effective.

That is the mentality that has led most of the idiots in this country to think that Bush lied about the war altogether. Stooges like Moore must be dealt with, and made a severe example of, doing this not only furthers your own cause, but discourages others from trying to bring you down as well.

:::
I have forgotten what it is like to have a fighting GOP. And they do not have to be polite — just return what the Dems hand out in like kind, hard and fast and go for the throat. Things would be alot different, because the Dems to ANYTHING, CRIMINAL OR NOT, AT WILL, WITH IMPUNITY....ala Pelosi, for example. They live in the gutter, they act like it, and it needs to be checked.

Yes! A Fred Thompson/Duncan Hunter or Fred Thompson/Mitt Romney ticket would be a winner over Clinton/Obama or any Democratic ticket. Without the overtones of the contested elections of the past.

For me, with the exception of Mike Huckabee, most of the GOP candidates are either not leadership material (more soldiers to get the job done), not presidential (several names come to mind here) or in several cases (McCain, Rudy and Paul) not viable salvageable Republicans (either they are true RINO or plain old every day Dem in elephant clothing or Libertarian/Isolationist). Don't get me wrong I like many Libertarian ideas however I can not go along with their unwillingness to fight an enemy bent on destroying us.

['Scuz me while I ponder this] Hum, the world with Fred Thompson in the White House, Mitt Romney as VP and Duncan Hunter as SECDEF and SECHLS (he could handle both roles easily). He wouldn't need to pick-up the phone since he and the Prez understand the situation, he'd just get the job done. Of course Congress would have to be re-educated (possibly special training camps, especially those rascal (Kenndey, Biden, Schumer, et al) "Socialist Regressive For The Common Good Bunch" on the meaning of the Constitution and how it was designed to work. [Sorry got carried away.]

I think Fred does have the charisma it takes to win, and if he enteres the race it will be evident. He has been doing his essays and his public speaking engagements have not been what I would call “campaign speeches”. But he has been expressing his feelings on many issues. I also like Romney, but just don’t think he could beat Hillary. But then, it may not be Hillary, as I believe Gore is going to run! :)

Good point.

I don’t know if Moore is a “stooge,” however. A bloated imbecile, a menace, an anti-American j**off - yes. But the word “stooge” implies a tool controlled by others. I think this guy controls himself, except at the buffet table.

I like Romney alot because he has alot of charisma and is much more conservative than his detractors say.

Most of the people voted for Clinton because of his charisma.

I voted against him because of his character.

Saying, on FreeRepublic, you like someone because of their charisma, makes one sound like a vacuous Hollywood bimbo. Caveat or not.

The Hollywood crowd and MSM are still beating the JFK drum because of his looks and charisma.

Charisma is something that most can manufacture (Al Gore and John Kerry being exceptions), in the world of high powered politics, handlers and coaches are hired to mold one into whatever is viewed as desirable at the time.

Why get in the slop with the pigs?

Fred speaking out is hardly getting in the pen with them! It's exposing the pigs and liars who use every medium to spread their venom.

Speaking out against these liars who spread fear is LONG OVERDUE! Good for Fred and anyone else who SPEAKS OUT against evil. Crush PC and let truth reign.
