What is it?

This reminded me of Sulejman Talovic, the Muslim immigrant, not an illegal, who terrorized a mall in Utah.

Are Churches no gun zones in ID?

I looked up “Carl Drega”. You could well be right.

I’m just getting tired of EVERYTHING automatically being “sudden jihad syndrome” if the name isn’t given immediately.

My apologies.

I suspect another “Carl Drega” situation.

In Moscow Idaho? Doesn't seem too likely.

UPDATE 1:35pm: KREM 2 News has just learned the name of the second victim killed in the police assault in Moscow Idaho. That victim is Paul Bauer, he is considered the grandfather of the First Presbyterian Church in Moscow. Bauer lived at the church and was the caretaker. He has been the caretaker of the church for the last year and a half. His friends say he always had a smile on his face. He was considered to be a night owl.

UPDATE 9:35am: Moscow Police announced that one of the law officers wounded in an ambush shooting late Saturday night has died. Sgt. Lee Newbill was pronounced DOA at the hospital after being shot outside of the Latah County Courthouse.

Sgt. Newbill is the first officer to ever die in the line of duty at the Moscow Police Department. He was a 7 year veteran.

Brannon Jordan, a sheriff's deputy with Latah County Sheriff's Office, is in serious condition at the hospital. He was also wounded in the ambush. A civilian who was hit is in surgery but stable condition.

No ID yet on the killer From looks of this, it *may* have been a full auto weapon.

And from this,

I'd say it was .30 cal. With an AK type being most likely, but of course there are lots of possibilites, including an M-2 Carbine.

Headed down to Moscow in about an hour. My neighbor down there reported full auto too but I question his actual firearms knowledge. He wasn’t on the scene. And yes, it sure looks like maybe an AK.

I have been out all day but can’t believe no perp name has been released yet.

BTW, at my shooting range recently two guys with AR-15s were shooting them rapid fire in a way that resembled fully auto weapons, using recoil to pull the trigger. I’d never seen this before and it even fooled the range officers who had to go check to see if these were actually full auto weapons (banned in WA state).

One of the guys offered to let me fire one, but I opted for two single shots separated by about 30 seconds. No mistaking it for an auto that way!

UPDATE 5:55am: Police report that between 30-40 rounds were fired into the dispatch area of the Latah County Courthouse, but no one inside was hit by the gunfire.

My wife is a police/fire/EMS dispatcher in our city. This news didn't sit well with her. He boss frowns on having her CCW weapon at work, but frankly there are lots of nutballs with animus towards the police department. Any employee will do.

Hi everyone. I live here in Moscow, ID. In fact Paul was a friend of ours and had been our neighbor for some time. It is partially for his sake that I am writing this.

This is what we know from monitoring the scanner through the night and what we have fought to find out.

Last night as 3 dispatchers were working in the sheriff’s office, a part of the court house, a 20 year old white male who had applied for the sheriffs department and was not getting a call back, opened fire on the exterior of the building.
He was using an SKS high power long range rifle with armor piercing bullets. After several rounds were fired an officer had left the building and was fired upon. Another officer had come around the side of the building and was fired upon as well.
One downed officer was removed from the premise by another while under fire. The other officer was rescued when a police car drove in under fire and got him from the road.
The assailant busted through the front doors of the church across the street from the courthouse. There he came into contact with Paul and Paul was shot dead.
The killer then entered into the back of the church area were he proceeded to shoot off several rounds at the courthouse and people. sometime after midnight a muffled gunshot was heard from inside the building at 6ish this morning State S.W.A.T. entered the Presbyterian Church to find Paul shot in the office and the body of the shooter in the back of the church.

Paul was an awesome man. He was a native of the New York area, raised in an Italian district, he always had interesting stories to tell. He was a veteran. He was a father. He lost his family do to his use of alcohol. In the time I knew him I learned alot about his regrets. He had cleaned up from alcohol and was just beginning to repair his relationship with his family. He was homeless for a little bit before he moved in and became caretaker to the church. The saddest part for me is while we were seeking information about the person shot in the church we found out his daughter was here visiting him. This would have been a very special moment for him as he had only just begun to talk to them again.
He was a very good hearted outgoing man, whom had made many friends in the community with his kindness.

So now you know what we know... Sorry I don’t write as well as a reporter I am not one but I was caught off by the speculating and racial profiling comments. Although I understand that we fight against an external threat of terrorism it would do us good to not overlook the problem children we have here in our own homeland.

This was not some foreigner with a grudge against the U.S. or whack job just out of the pen and pissed at those who put him in. It was a 20 year old boy with an SKS, armor piercing bullets and an ‘I’m going to prove myself’ attitude who was using innocent dispatchers as bait to lure sheriffs into a deadly situation.

I hope your wife knows that me and many like me are VERY thankful for the work your wife does and are exceedingly grateful for the risks taken by our public workers to uphold a peaceful society.
This only reinforces the importance of her job.

That’s all for me.

as a former resident of Moscow- and long time resident of Spokane- My thoughts and prayers are with all in moscow-
I am confused by this turn of the conversation taking place here- I have traveled and worked in and with many areas of the US since I left this area- I have worked with and in many cultures- this jump off topic is part of the problem not any help or solution to it-
and as for the comment that the Carl Drega type of situation is not likely in Moscow- I bet at 9:00 Saturday morning any Moscow area resident would have said that the insident at hand was not going to happen in their town either-
Moscow is and always has been a University town-
I fail to see where or how that automatically makes it more or less likely that this was an act of an “outside” person or person from another culture-
Courthouses- and in my view especially in small towns-
are “Americana “ all they way - and an assult on one is more likely to be a area resident- and some one who feeels very wronged by what they felt were “there own people”
If you think that because Moscow is small, farming and country-that these events are unlikley - “they just don’t happen here” you need to open your eyes-
this happens anywhere and everywhere — sad and unfortunate as that is

It seems the shooter was a white guy with an SKS rifle. To my knowledge (I have an SKS) the SKS is semi-automatic only and uses a 7.62mm round (same as AK47). It is classified as a curio and relic by the ATF.

Morning JB :)

Looks like the guy wasn’t getting a callback from the Sherrif’s dept there. I guess from reading another post, that he had applied to work there and didn’t get a response.

BTW bud, I’m outta here on the 9th of June, we need to get together soon!!

Thanks for the feedback. My wife suspected a disgruntled employee. Close enough. BTW, the SKS is not a high powered rifle. It shoots a medium power 123 gr .311 caliber bullet. There is a fair amount of surplus Russian ammo with a steel shell between the outer copper jacket and inner lead core. That might appear to be an AP round, but it really isn't. The rifle isn't particularly long range or exceptionally accurate. Most of them (like my Romanian variant) are 5 MOA rifles i.e. they can only repeatably put rounds in a 5 inch circle at 100 yards. My "good" rifles maintain under 1/2 inch at 100 yards.

My condolences on the loss of your neighbor, friends and officers.

....gee, with his evident ability to slaughter people indiscriminately I can’t see WHY they didn’t hire him on the spot...???

What a loser.
