Classic McCain. Passing bill he has no idea what the consequences wil be.
Steyn has written a very glib article about a very serious problem. We must get control of our borders. Our country is being flooded with drugs which are coming from an increasingly violent and lawless Mexico. The unassimilated young latinos in our country are increasingly joining gangs that threaten our cities. We cannot continue this march toward a bi-lingual country. There must be one language if we hope to move toward a homogeneous society.
The immigration bill that is before us deserves serious consideration. Steyn says that the 12 million illegals who are here now will simply ignore the law. Isn’t there a provision that punishes employers who hire illegals? If they can’t work, they may take this law seriously.
And we all should take this problem seriously — Steyn included.
” that looks less like bipartisanship and more like the lockstep myopia of an out-of-touch one-party state. “
Steyn has a “The Emperor Has No Clothes!” moment....
First, it's not an immigration bill. It is a sanctioning of those who have broken the law, skipped the line that every legal immigrant must take, because of personal greed. It rewards those who cut the line, broke the law, because it's deemed too difficult to actually enforce the law to begin with. So why should they give a rat's buttocks about this newest law? Less than half, 40%, of the illegals in the United States eventually took advantage of the Reagan Amnesty. And that was after a fourth chance was offered to take advantage of it, and a considerable amount of the fees were waved.
Who should take this seriously? Every American who believes that you should follow the rules. Every American who is tired of every benefit being given to those who ignore the rules. It means calling everyone and telling them, NO, you won't put up with this bull droppings anymore.
Yes, we need control of our borders, but this won't control it. The next wave will be even larger. Here's the rule: Get to America, stay there, and eventually, you'll be offered citizenship. You don't even have to take advantage of it. I say no. What do you say?
Let's apply the same arguments to millions of Chinese who want to live here... would the "political class" capitulate so quickly? I suspectdemocrats wouldn't fight for a group that wouldn't vote for them - and pubbies wouldn't back a group that would...
I had a discussion with a lib Dem co worker of mine. He said there is no difference between this wave of immigration and the immigration of the early 1920’s. What are you nuts? Groceries weren’t marketed in Polish or Italian. Schools didn’t hold classes in those languages either. You were expected to learn English. I fear this isn’t immigration as much as it is an invasion and a hostile takeover. People need to wake up!
In my post, which you quoted, I said, "Isnt there a provision that punishes employers who hire illegals? If they cant work, they may take this law seriously." You didn't answer that.
But more importantly, neither you nor most of the people talking about this bill, talk constuctively about fixing this problem. It is serious and getting worse. Here's a link to an article about Mexican drug dealers killing Mexican law enforcement officials.
No one has to take drugs, but we citizens are forced to see our country turned into a third world stink hole due to our population and culture being transformed from an essentially functional American culture into a dysfunctional third world culture.
Are you even aware of the fact that there is already laws saying that illegals cannot work in this country and that employers who hire illegals can be fined? Haven’t you read the stories where Walmart and chicken processors have been fined for hiring illegals?
Have you seen how effective that law has been in keeping illegals from working in this country? The current law punishing employers who hire illegals is totally ineffective as anyone with even half a brain and the slightest knowledge of current events is well aware of, so there is absolutely no reason to think that any future law would be any more effective in keeping the illegals from working than the current law has been.
Get real, man!
Wake up and smell the coffee!
You are the most gullible person on the planet. You cannot see the different between window dressing and reality. Are you sure you know the difference between your elbow and other aspects of your anatomy?
Stupid liberal cannot understand the difference between legal and illegal. America wanted the immigrants in the late 1800’s and we do not want the waves of uneducated illegal alien invaders over running our country like the Vandals over ran and destroyed Rome.
Kick all the illegals out and shoot to kill anyone who attempts to cross our borders illegally. That should fix the problem in record time.
Not to mention, welfare and free medical.
Correct, but the consideration should be by the public. The public must vet this bill and, because of its importance, it should go through at least one national election cycle.
I, for one, do not trust the politicians; they had their chance to enforce the border and have chosen not to do so. What is going to make them start doing it now?
Bingo!
The political class' urge to capitulate on the integrity of the national border sends as important a message to the world about American will as their urge to capitulate on Iraq.
Hooray Mark!
This is just cynicism. “ so there is absolutely no reason to think that any future law would be any more effective in keeping the illegals from working than the current law has been.” If you believe that workplace enforcement is impossible, even when significantly strengthened, then what do you propose?
Well put, if a bit blunt, but we do need to be blunt - the problem is that while some us see it for what it is, the mass majority of our fellow citizens are sitting in comas watching American Idol while their country is ripped away from them - they will only come stumbling into the daylight wondering what happened when tragedy strikes, like 9-11.
“Steyn has written a very glib article about a very serious problem.”
No, he addressed it correctly - it’s all a massive joke, and should be treated as such. While flippant, he cuts the issue down to it’s core.
Too bad most people don’t read him, or won’t.
