WASHINGTON The Senate is poised to begin debate on the most sweeping immigration overhaul in decades after a bipartisan group of lawmakers announced they have agreed on a deal. Their draft would provide a way for millions of undocumented immigrants to come forward and live and work legally in the United Sates.
"Politics is the art of the possible, and the agreement we just reached is the best possible chance we will have in years to secure our borders, bring millions of people out of the shadows and into the sunshine of America,'' Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said Thursay. Kennedy, flanked by two other Democrats, seven Republicans and two Bush cabinet secretaries, outlined a plan that has created a most unlikely political coalition.
The bill would allow the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants who have been in the United States since Jan. 1 of this year to pay $5,000 in fines, pass criminal background checks, learn English and document their work history to stay and work legally. But these workers would only get put on a path to get their green cards once some enforcement triggers are met

And once the bill is passed or probably even now, the stampede will be on to get into this country before the border, if ever, is secured. We would need a huge increase in the present brureaucracy just to process these numbers and enforce the laws. This is AMNESTY.
Thank you for all of the information on this sham.
I don’t get it — what part of the word “illegal” don’t our so-called leaders understand?
I’m just livid and yes, I’m writing my doofuses in Washington to let them know about it.
Just change the word “illegal” to legal and the problem is solved-—not.
Unnamed, huh... Or perhaps Unmanned?
&&&
Yep, this is what we get for “journalists” this days. Then again, perhaps it’s unnamed because it’s an “undocumented worker”.
Has anyone here EVER seen a mexican comply fully with any set of rules? No. First said mexican will plead stupidity, then incompetence, then he will summon his ACLU representative, then his “local affiliation”. Ridiculous.
What if I neglected to pay my income taxes over the past dozen years? Could I get off scott free with only a $5,000 fine?
**
Yeah, what if 12M of us decided not to pay our taxes? Would we then be too many to “round up”?
I TRIED to tell folks around here that Isakson was a weasel BEFORE Newt anointed him.
Now there it is for all to see.
Time for a massive house cleaning.
This bill would practically do away with illegal immigration. As soon as someone stepped foot on the US they could claim a Z visa using phony documents and never be deported. There won't be enforcement against any new laws. If this isn't stopped we're looking at 100 million new people at least in 5 to 10 years.
Main Points
Millions of people who broke the law rewarded.
They invite their cousins.
Every government agency, every hospital, every school will be completely strained by this. And most of these people are "pickers" and "diggers" without skills who do not know, nor want to learn, English. How many of these people can we possibly absorb?
There are Americans who have paid taxes their entire lives or served in the military who are not getting the services that they deserve while social services are shifted to accomodate illegals.
You know what I never really cared for him either. I really didn’t think Chambliss would back stab us like he did though. I just sent Isakson another e-mail. Having his aide lie like that just burns me up even more.
State and local governments should be coming out against this because they’ll be bankrupted eventually. The federal government doesn’t reimburse states now for all the costs and they won’t in the future either.
And to think, I used to respect our leaders.
That's why they think we're stupid.
These clowns KNOW that the “rabble” (and that’s what they consider us) out here have about a 20 nanosecond memory for crap like this and will stagger to the polls next election and vote them back in.
That’s how a drunken letch like Ted Kennedy keeps HIS job.
NEVER FORGET!!!!!!! If necessary, KEEP A LIST of these abuses of the Constitution and share it regularly with your like-minded friends.

AND GET ACTIVE. For God’s sake — and that of your kids — DO SOMETHING. It can actually be FUN!
Around 6 am on dark morning in the early 80s, 4 of us piled into a car in Atlanta with a few hundred TRIM bulletins and other fact-packed flyers detailing how then Georgia Representative Ed Jenkins and Senator Sam Nunn were voting on issues important to all citizens. Our destination was Hartwell, Georgia and an Eggs and Issues Breakfast hosted by a large Hartwell church.
We arrived at the church about an hour early and deployed. As folks arrived for the buffet line, each was handed some of this highly informative literature. As they waited in line, they read and chatted as new information came to their attention. Just before the invited dignitaries were to make their 20 minute speeches (aka, pitches for re-election), we made certain a supply of these flyers made it to the head table. Ed and Sam ate precious little of the fine southern breakfast cuisine before them as they periodically glanced menacingly at the table we occupied. In unison, the 4 of us smiled sweetly and waved.
When Ed and Sam each rose to speak, each devoted 16 or 17 minutes of the allotted 20 minutes TRYING TO DEFEND their DOCUMENTED VOTING RECORDS to an increasingly hostile gathering as we returned Ed and Sams withering stares with more sweet smiles and waves. It was truly one of the highlights of my early years as a political bomb-thrower. YOU should try it!
After a bit more bomb-throwing in other parts of his district, Ed Jenkins was defeated in the next election. Because he ran state-wide and we lacked the resources and manpower to cover the entire state (and he did begin to clean up his act) Sam hung on for another term or two.
I am willing to fight and if we fight together we shall win.
Chertoff is stuck in the middle and is probably saying to himself “Great, I have to go on television and try to polish this stupid turd and keep a straight face.”
Can you say
STAMPEDE!
