Sit-in silliness: The sixties are over, dude

At about 3 p.m. on Wednesday a group of anti-war protesters entered Sen. John Sununu's Elm Street office. By 11:30 nine were still sitting around, refusing to leave. All nine managed to get themselves arrested. No doubt they are proud of themselves, but the question is, what did this little stunt accomplish?

Besides disrupting the work of Sen. Sununu's staff, the protesters achieved nothing. No one's opinion was changed, nor was Sen. Sununu's position on the war. Does anyone really believe the senator would change his vote based on the rude antics of nine peaceniks?

Yes, the protesters received some press coverage. But most Americans now agree that America should withdraw from the war in Iraq, so the sit-in was hardly some bold act of civil disobedience or defiant stance against the prevailing opinion. It was an exercise in self-indulgence.

Of those arrested protesters, only two were younger than 50. Maybe no one has told them that the Sixties are over.

When four black college freshmen sat at a Woolworth's lunch counter on Feb. 1, 1960, and refused to leave until served, that was something. Today, these protests do nothing but disrupt the offices of elected officials and feed the egos of the wanna-be flower children.

Memo to the protesters: Grow up, get a life, and stop wasting the time of responsible people.

I've been reading "Deconstructing the Left" by Peter Collier and David Horowitz, and now reading an article like this makes me see how these folks are so clueless. The left knew precisely what it was doing in the Vietnam era--trying to make the US lose and the Soviets win--and the only difference this time is that instead of the Soviets it's Al Qaeda. These noodleheads think that Al Qaeda will just fade away and will never threaten THEM personally, but a defeated US will somehow lead to their Utopian Socialist future, somehow.

Fools, but fools who can do so much damage.

Yep. I was pretty busy in the late '60s serving my country, so I had kind of a major disconnect with these folks. It's kind of irritating having some people think we were all like that.

When I see these pitiful, developmentally constricted souls in their ponytails and birkenstocks, it's a toss-up whether to laugh or cry...
