'Today': Haircut to Hedge Fund, Dee Dee Digs at Edwards
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

In the unlikely event John Edwards is elected the next president of the United States, don't look for Dee Dee Myers twirling on the dance floor with him at the Inaugural Ball. Appearing on this morning's "Today," the former Clinton press secretary took some serious shots at the former senator from North Carolina.

At about 7:08 am EDT this morning, Meredith Vieira did a tour of the presidential horizon with Myers and conservative commentator and radio talk show host Laura Ingraham. Talk turned to Edwards, and Vieira framed the issue in a manner not particularly flattering to the ex-trial lawyer.

View video here.

TODAY CO-HOST MEREDITH VIEIRA: You have Democratic candidate John Edwards, who portrays himself as a man of the people but obviously a very rich man of the people. He has assets of just under $30 million and earned another $500,000 last year workin for a hedge fund. So who has the bigger image problem, do you think, John Edwards or Giuliani? [Note: the panel had previously discussed Rudy's recent earnings of $16 million].
Ingraham declined to bite at Vieira's class-warfare bait.
LAURA INGRAHAM: I don't think American people are concerned with what your portfolio says or how much money you've made. I think they're concerned with where you're going to take the nation.
Myers was considerably less forgiving.
DEE DEE MYERS: But I do think that in the short term the press is going to make an issue out of the fact that he talks a lot about poverty and he works for a hedge fund, which is a very lucrative investment vehicle available only to the wealthiest Americans. He talks about poverty but he lives in a huge house. He talks about poverty but he pays $400 for his haircut. Those may not be fair but in the short run I think they're going to cause him a little heartburn. You know, I don't think you need to be a consultant to a hedge fund or invest in a hedge fund to learn how capital markets work and how they affect poverty in this country, and I'm not sure that explanation sticks.
Ouch!

I’d LOVE to know what these MSM anchors are making and their net worth.

IMHO, their simpatico reporting is as though they don’t have two nickels to rub together.

I think that was merely accurate and analytical, not nasty.

I’m guessing that as a conservative and supporter of free markets, Laura didn’t want to get drawn into a class-warfare critique of Edwards.

If Edwards is the nominee, they won’t talk about this again, insisting it’s “OLD NEWS”.

In the meantime, this is just two democrat females shilling for their candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Because unfortunately, principles matter, and class warfare is wrong. If the question had been about whether he was a hypocrit, she could have answered, but it wasn’t, it was about whether his wealth itself was a problem.

Perhaps, but when you’re a prominent Democrat, making accurate and analytical remarks about a fellow Dem that are highly unflattering to him is, in effect, nasty. If Dee Dee were supportive of Edwards, she could have easily found a way to finesse the issue. She could for example simply have seconded Ingraham’s analysis.

she missed a prime opportunity to show how hypocritical Edwards is as he takes big bucks from a hedge fund that invests in subprime mortgage group while he is decrying the same subprime group for victimizing low income Americans on the stump

Myers is carrying the Clinton’s water as usual.

However, in this particular instance her best weapon happens to be the truth.

Yes, all she needed to point out is edwards’ hypocrisy and laugh at him regarding the hedgefund.

Ingraham handled that question quite well, I think.

I guessing either the base is still not happy with Hellary bigging top dog

Or this is an attempt to get our side to attack Edwards more

Laura Ingraham is a democratic shill whose candidate is Hillary Clinton? That’s one of the most ridiculous comments I’ve ever heard.

He talks about poverty but he pays $400 for his haircut.

Sounds like Dee Dee is still one of Hillary's creatures.

I'd love to know what Dee Dee had to say about Slick's $200 tarmac haircut by Kristoff back in the day.
