PELOSI LOWERS THE BOOM Wed May 16 2007 14:43:59 ET

After losing a string of embarrassing votes on the House floor because of procedural maneuvering, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has decided to change the current House Rules to completely shut down the floor to the minority.

The Democratic Leadership is threatening to change the current House Rules regarding the Republican right to the Motion to Recommit or the test of germaneness on the motion to recommit. This would be the first change to the germaneness rule since 1822.

In protest, the House Republicans are going to call procedural motions every half hour.

I often do.

May I recommend the book of Jeremiah?

Let scripture be your guide in worldly affairs.

Thanks for your recommendation, I appreciate it.
I don’t do scripture, I try and live to the best of my ability as I was raised in my own Catholicism.
I believe that we are on the same page, just different versions.

The Left is never wrong, period. Leftist ideology is consistent in that it is never subject to criticism by anyone except the enemies of the left.

With all due respect, aren't you guys overestimating the power of the forum in molding public opinion?

I was refering to the electorate in general, and not just the small (relatively) group on this forum. A Lot of Republicans voted for Dems this last time around, and I think that's because they believe the stuff that's pumped out in the airwaves, newspapers and repeated in social circles.

No - this is NOT nonsense. The GOP voter turnout was down in 2006. You are obviously one of the "teach 'em a lesson crowd".

Actually, I was an R party official and ran the GOTV for a major swing county in a swing state in 2006. I've seen the numbers from the election. There is no support in the numbers for the "conservatives stayed home" mantra. None. In fact, we had huge turnout in the conservative, south county precincts. We lost because independents and squishy republicans voted democrat. That was true nationwide. The turnaround in the indy vote between 2004 and 2006 was huge almost everywhere.

Had the conservatives not turned out, we would have lost an additional 30 or so house seats. But turnout only helps in close elections. There weren't enough of those to hold the house.

Respectfully, you should learn something about the numbers before you start expressing opinions based on the numbers.

> Remember the Christian work ethic?

At the risk of offending my Catholic brethren whom I greatly respect (I’m married to one), it used to be called the Protestant Work Ethic, not the Christian Work Ethic.

It was Luther, I believe, who proposed the then radical idea that one could glorify God by doing their secular day job in an honest, conscientious (Christian) manner, and need not join the monastic life in order to demonstrate a higher allegiance to God.

I would argue that this discernment on his part was in large part responsible for the huge leap-ahead of Western civilization, as Christian behavior was taken out of the Church and moved into the street... the Christian street.

...not to be confused with the “Arab street, known for whining, rioting, bigotry, and other self-defeating behaviors.

Dems expect us to follow the rules and protect the minority when they are the minority. However, if they do not like how things are done when they are the majority then they see no problem changing the rules to benefit them. You can bet if the Rebs had tried to do something like this two years ago they would have thrown a massive hissy fit.

And this was the entire argument made by some around here for NOT employing the Nuclear Option over Supreme Court Justices. "Watch out with the Nuclear Option. We may not be in the majority forever."

Well, here we are NOT in the majority, NOT having employed the Nuclear Option and what is happening? Exactly what many said would happen. The Dems are changing whatever rule they want to change anyway. They don't care about fairness or the gentlemen's game or precedent or history or traditions. They care about the present and the future. And they don't care what they destroy because they know that if they lose the majority, we will have to waste most of our time trying to clean things up.

“She/they won fair and square. We need to not be asleep at the switch next election.”

Exactly. I shamefully went away on business and DID NOT VOTE. That will never, ever happen again. Shows what happens when good Americans put their head in the sand focusing on the almighty dollar instead of each other that make up this great nation of ours.

“What will be the reaction to the fact that we have representation that has now been rendered voiceless? There are days I fear where we are headed in this country...”

The last time that really happened was the American Revolution. Taxation without representation was what is taught in history of what started our Revolution. But let me refine that a bit because I love history. Truth is, England repealed any and all representation replacing local American governors with British after the Boston Tea Party. That little move by the British didn’t work out for them too well now did it? Ignore a women in your house for a few days. Want to see war?!?!
