LONDON --Britain's Prince Harry will not be sent with his unit to Iraq, Britain's top general said Wednesday, citing specific threats to the third in line to the throne.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Sir Richard Dannatt said the changing situation on the ground exposed the prince to too much danger.

Prince William and Prince Harry, right, parade in suits and bowler hats with the Combined Cavalry Old Comrades' Association, in Hyde Park, London, on Sunday, May 13, 2007. The tradition of officers wearing black bowler hats and carrying umbrellas goes back to the First World War.

I agree... however, he will be king someday and it is wise to protect him. He can’t have secret service surrounding him in Iraq.

He is a spare. There is a great chance he won’t ever be King. William’s kids will be King before he is when he has them.

Churchill would have said send him with his unit and al Qaeda be damned.

He won't be King, unless something happens to his older brother. I thought this is what extra sons were for...

Harry is the younger son, not the heir to the throne. They should let him go.

Sorry got my princes mixed up. I thought he was the older son of Prince Charles and Diana.

The mistake was making public his future deployment. I don’t understand those taking cheap shots at the kid, by all accounts he wanted to serve honorably.

Ridiculous! Let the fellow go. That’s why he joined.

He was and is still in the direct line.

At the time of the Falkland War, he was in the same position Harry is in now - he was second in the line of succession. Right now, he’s fourth.

It’s Charles, then William, then any of William’s (hypothetical) children, then Harry, then Andrew.

Maybe Bush can swap--
We'll send Paris to Iraq,
they send Harry here . . .

They should never have made this public. He could never serve in Iraq since he would become a terror magnet.

A unit can’t quite operate like that, when its commander MUST lead from the front, but his squaddies MUST see that he isn’t hurt. And the commander must live with the additional knowledge that his presence will probably be the cause of his squadmates being killed or injured as ‘collateral damage’.

thanks for the correction. I realize he is in the direct line. Just not as close as Harry.

So, why even discuss articles if you’re convinced they’re full of lies...when they disagree with you, of course. Anything that is consonant with your opinion is truthful!

At the time of the Falklands War, Andrew was second in line. Harry has always been third.

But British Law states that a child born of wedlock is the child of the father, regardless of DNA. So, even if he is not genetically Charles’ son, he is according to the law. (and he is a quite strapping young man...)

I'll stay quiet... I don't know how that all works. I should just keep quiet.

thanks for the information.

I think that may be a rebuttable presumption... unless paternity is disproven - once almost impossible to do, now, easy.... Looking at him, there's no way he's Charlie's spawn....

I never believed that he’d be sent. If I were in his unit, I’d be jumping for joy right now. Every jihadist in Iraq would have been gunning for that unit. I think the Brits made the right choice. Good for Harry for wanting to go though.

“Silly hats are a family weakness.”

Really? This photo is the first time I have ever seen William or Harry wearing one. You realize that the wearing of bowlers was required for the function they were participating in don’t you? You should have read the caption.

“Harry is the younger son, not the heir to the throne. They should let him go.”

By being a target for fanatics he would put his whole unit in danger. They are right to keep him home. It wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the soldiers in his unit.
