"Why don't you pick up that gun and blow your brains out?"
"You could kill a whole lot of people with that gun."
"Why not shoot her right now? That would shut her up!"
These are the sorts of vile mental suggestions many people experience from within their own minds when they see a gun.
That's right. Dark thoughts and impulses, too horrible to dwell upon or even acknowledge, occur to many of us at the mere sight of a firearm or a naked blade. When we see the firearm, we sense the presence of evil so naturally we assume the gun is its source, when actually the gun's close proximity caused our own buried, angry, violent tendencies to surface for a moment.
Thus, many people who "dislike" or "are afraid of" guns are actually afraid of what they might do if they had a loaded firearm in their hand. And I'm not talking about criminal types here. I'm talking about "nice" people nice on the outside, and lots of buried and perhaps unrecognized rage inside. Again, the presence of the gun simply causes his or her own dark, angry propensities to "stir a little" deep down inside.
But the reality of all this is too heavy and "negative" for many of us to face, so we instantly and unconsciously project our own buried violence onto the gun as though an inanimate hunk of metal could somehow be evil.

Bump for truth. They simply don't trust their own mental stability. .....and justifiably so in many cases.
As a lifelong gun owner, I have never had those thoughts. Even when I was married.
I’ve never heard a gun talking, but I have on occasion heard the faint pleading of a piece of chocolate cake...”Don’t let us go stale! There’s only a small slice remaining. We go very nicely with that glass of milk.”
Wow!! Great article.
Me too. Like automobile and jet engines, these things are finest forms of art and mechanical engineering combined.
I guess people should fear more about what might happen if one goes off ‘accidentally’ owing to their poor training after obtaining one of these, than about their suppressed suicidal tendencies resurfacing, for which they needn’t necessarily hunt for a gun.
My pot of chili occasionally intones, “Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble.....”, but I don’t listen to it.
One of the best articles I’ve read.....
I’ll be posting this on the gunboard I frequent....
Thanks for posting it....
These dark thought people are so whacko, I can't even imagine it.
I have met some of my best friends at the shooting range and hunting for ruffed grouse!
BANG!
My guns tell me to go hunting, but one time they did tell me to blow up an old acoustic guitar filled with water and duct tape over the hole.
When I peer at the guns in my safe, little voices in my head say, “Bet you can’t shoot just one”.
Guns in the local gun shop often whisper “Buy me. Buy me.” Somehow I feel compelled to do what they say.
You’re all jealous because the guns only talk to me....
LOL My “dark thoughts” run to dark chocolate.
I also appreciate the aesthetic aspects in many of my firearms, something that is present in most of my working guns as well as the fancier, inlaid models (of which I own very few).
Also, don’t leave out the historical/heirloom angle. Many of my guns are old military surplus that I have purchased with a FFL03 (Curio & Relic license). Many are very well made, unbelievably affordable, accurate, and function well for their age, even the ones over 100 years old. And, of course, many bear the scars of use - mostly training, but some have seen battle.
The guns most valuable to me are old and worn. They are the guns I inherited from my father, and although he has been gone for 20 years, I still have the memories of him carrying them on hunting trips we shared together when I was a boy.
As for this nonsense of dark thoughts, my mind is usually occupied with thoughts of grip/sight picture/smooth trigger squeeze.
I take mine out to the range.
They start to say: “shoot me, clean me, shoot me, clean me...”
I put them away and head to the lounge.
I’m currently divorcing and have not had such thoughts even with quite a few firearms available. 5 years ago I locked them all up and changed combinations, my wife has a dark, unstable side.......
Guns talk to me all the time!
Why, just a few weeks ago I was at a gun show, and I walked past a table with a beautiful Desert Eagle in .44 mag.
I very clearly heard it say “Buy Me! Please buy me!”
