Hitchens insults Falwell hours after his death!
CNN.com ^

Posted on 05/16/2007 5:55:40 AM PDT by anglosphere

COOPER: Author and outspoken atheist Christopher Hitchens is about as far from Jerry Falwell in his beliefs as one could get. Christian fundamentalists are a major target of his new book, "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything." He joins me now from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Christopher, I'm not sure if you believe in heaven, but, if you do, do you think Jerry Falwell is in it?

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR, "VANITY FAIR": No. And I think it's a pity there isn't a hell for him to go to.

COOPER: What is it about him that brings up such vitriol?

HITCHENS: The empty life of this ugly little charlatan proves only one thing, that you can get away with the most extraordinary offenses to morality and to truth in this country if you will just get yourself called reverend. Who would, even at your network, have invited on such a little toad to tell us that the attacks of September the 11th were the result of our sinfulness and were God's punishment if they hadn't got some kind of clerical qualification?

People like that should be out in the street, shouting and hollering with a cardboard sign and selling pencils from a cup. The whole consideration of this -- of this horrible little person is offensive to very, very many of us who have some regard for truth and for morality, and who think that ethics do not require that lies be told to children by evil old men, that we're -- we're not told that people who believe like Falwell will be snatched up into heaven, where I'm glad to see he skipped the rapture, just found on the floor of his office, while the rest of us go to hell.

I think Hitchens is a despicable soulless man with no sense of decorum... the man just died. Whether or not you agreed with his faith, today is not the day for such venom and atheistic bigotry.

Did he have anything to say about the death of Rev. King’s daughter?

It really is of little importance what Hitchens think or say. In due time he will find out how terribly wrong he was. And then it will be too late...

Hitch always does that. If memory serves, he did the same thing when Mother Teresa died.

It’s just projection. He doesn’t hate Falwell, he hates God.

For Fallwell to have made the comments that he did revealed a level of zealotry and ignorance that any reasonable person should consider. I see no point in people dancing on his grave but if Jerry was forgiven for using 9-11 to spout of his cracked views then perhaps Hitchens can be offered the same.

“The Marxist views of Christopher Hitchens have long been evident. His simple, logical support for a strong response to 9/11 had earned him as bestowed by his fellow leftists the label “necon” which he steadfastly refutes. In reality Christopher Hitchens is an angry man whose anger - while many times is justifiable - is also misplaced.” (This is an unattributed quote).

Falwell's unheard response - That's ok, Chris, I love you, and Christ does too.

Hitchens is a Trotskyite and in the past he has defamed Reagan, Mother Theresa, Vietnam combat veterans and many other icons of the conservative movement. He only takes a “conservative” (really a neoconservative) position on the Middle East; the liberals can have him.

There have been a lot of tasteless and cruel things said about Reverend Falwell in the last 24 hours. Very sad.

I remember the Freeper response to the death of Coretta Scott King. A few of us mentioned we disagreed with her positions but prayed for her. Most just said kindly they hoped she rested in peace. We were critical of those who used her funeral for political purposes. More of the world should act like the members here when someone with whom they had differences passes.

Larry Flynt has been many times more decent than some of the commentators on Reverend Falwell.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

This guy is not mad at Falwell, he's mad at God. He speaks of morality and ethics without considering their source. Actually...I believe he does consider their source, but he wants to be the source and that is the true source of his anger because he knows he is not.

All this because Jerry thought homosexuality was a sin.

>>It’s just projection. He doesn’t hate Falwell, he hates God.<<

He may also hate policies and/or positions supported by Reverend Falwell. That’s still no excuse.

All this because Jerry thought homosexuality was a sin.

Evidently the Eleventh Commandment, contrary to what Ronald Reagan said, is "Thou shalt not cross the homosexual lobby."
