What case? Allow me to repeat: You flatly asserted that it was impossible (due to some nonsense about drag) for billbears' car to get better mileage at 70 than at 55. I indicated that my car gets substantially better gas mileage at 70 than it does at 55. No one was talking about higher speeds until you shifted context and threw up the straw-man. Your original assertion was demonstrably wrong. You can't make it right by claiming to have made some other argument.

If I am doing the speed limit (or better) on a one lane I see little reason to pull off the road to allow non-emergency traffic to pass;if I am in the left-most lane of a freeway,it is likely I have just passed a slow semi or am planning on one of those rare left-hand exits.Generally I drive in the middle lane .Still NOTHING annoys me while driving. like those supercharged egos with their leftist slogan flashing their headlights as though they are really important.AS a long time commuter and driver on winding rural roads and having once done road patrol,I realize the posted speed limits are basically worst condition maximums.Generally 5 to 10 mph over the posted speeds won’t get much attention;but when then posted limit is 65,average traffic is 75 and some idiot roars through at 90 ,often passing first on one side,then the other, I certainly hope he or she very soon is handed a speeding citation.No matter how high you set the limits,some will claim they can safely exceeed those limits.There limits to human reaction time in case of disabled vehicles,animals, and debris in the road.Every mph more speed reduces the available time to avoid a collision.

For most people's cars, this would be the case. I wasn't thinking in terms of THAT type of car. Once his case was clarified, I can clarify my case. The facts still are: air drag will increase fuel consumption regardless of the car. The affects of drag are greatly affected by the shape of the car, which I wasn't initially considering. The type of engine will affect the parameters for which the mechanics has been optimized.

Velocity is limited by air drag. There is a top end to every car. This is caused almost entirely by air drag. Do you wish to argue against that?

As the velocity of the car approaches its top end, its MPG will degrade rather quickly. Do you wish to dispute that?

My case is and always will be, you won't get the best milage at high speeds. Sure, some cars do better than others. Sure, some cars are optimized for for higher speeds. Speed will eventually degrade MPG, regardless of the type of car. Physics is still physics.

Sometimes I think about the one thing I'd like to do if there's ever the opportunity (post apocalytic event or something): drive from Kansas City to Denver in under four hours. That is, actually be able to drive a car built for the autobahn the way it was meant to be driven: fast. I can dream, can't I?

If you've ever driven across Kansas on I-70, you might realize that speed might just not be quite as dangerous as boredom...

And in the spirit of this thread, just remember one of the rules that makes the autobahn so safe, despite the speeds:

Rechtsfahren!

By the way. You must be a youngster. It is entirely permissible to refine one's stance in an argument as the discourse develops. It layman's terms, this is called a conversation. This two-way process allows a continuing exchange of ideas that can eventually lead to an accurate and thorough understanding of the viewpoints maintained by the parties in the conversation. This technique is frequently used in all sorts of human endeavors. The educational process often uses this approach. Engineering processes use this approach. Politics should use this approach, but the way people now practice conversation in this country has all but eliminated practical debate.

Yeah, I know. But I like being the way I am. My provocations are usually harmless. And they usually begin when someone follows way too close and honks. So I pay them back. But I act like a "clueless driver", eyes straight ahead, going slow, overly focused. Little do they know that I am intentionally driving them crazy. It can be fun. Try it!

As a defense the slow left-laner stubbornly refuses to submit, mumbling autistically to himself that he, by god, has a right to drive 55 mph in the left lane if he wants to.

I do it on purpose, with great deliberation. I know that I don't have a right to go 55, I have a REASON to go 55. And that is to piss off the person behind me.

Big time. There’s nothing worse than having to merge into interstate traffic at 40 MPH because the clown right in front of you won’t go any faster, so you’re just stuck. It is downright dangerous and that’s when I’m doing my best to not reach the road-rage point. Some people just have no business driving on the interstate and should stick to back-roads or public transportation.

*Snort*. I've driven a Cobra before... it makes *perfect* sense. That ain't a Miata or a luxury sedan, it's a street-legal race car. Experiencing it is less "driving" and more "launch and recovery".

I agree with you and offer my condolences on the loss of your friend and his family.

I think it would be very rare to find a driver who has not exceeded the posted speed limit at one time or another. I would like to think that those who are going a bit faster than I am, are doing so for a reason. I know that has been the case for me. Reasons for speeding can be as simple as needing to get to the bathroom, or as urgent as getting to an emergency room.

I have no way of knowing who is just speeding to speed or who is speeding out of necessity, so whenever possible, I get out of their way.

This thread brings up two thoughts.

First, there are more fatalities on the road than air transportation. I wonder if this is so because the licensing, medical requirements, and renewal standards for flying are much more stringent than driving. Perhaps meeting a much tougher standard before being allowed to drive and to continue to drive would alleviate much of the tragedies we see on the road.

Second, I wonder if removing speedometers from cars would make a difference. Without the reference of the speedometer, I would think that folks would drive at their “comfort” speed rather than at a preconceived “this is the speed that I should be driving” speed, which may be higher than the drivers abilities.

Hey, my opinions are free and are worth every penny.

If you're not in that much of a hurry, take a different road and stay out of the left lane there too. It is inconsiderate and selfish to detain drivers who have places to go, people to see and things to do.
