The other day on Fox News Sunday, Rudolph W. Giuliani blamed a former aide for the decision to put the citys emergency command center at 7 World Trade Center, where it was destroyed on 9/11. Now the aide, Jerome M. Hauer, the former director of emergency management, has fired back, giving Lloyd Grove of New York magazine a February 1996 memo that shows he argued for a Brooklyn location. He says the mayor overruled him.
Here is what Mr. Giuliani said on Fox:
Jerry Hauer recommended that as the prime site and the site that would make the most sense. He recommended that site as the site that would be the best site. It was largely on his recommendation that that site was selected.
Mr. Hauers memo to First Deputy Mayor Peter J. Powers recommended the MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn: The building is secure and not as visible a target as buildings in Lower Manhattan. The World Trade Center had been bombed three years earlier.
Mr. Hauer told Lloyd Grove in an interview:
Rudys getting a lot of heat for the decision. Hes trying to run on his homeland-security and national-security background, and if you start peeling back the skin on the errors he made when he was mayor, you take away a lot of the basis for his candidacy I feel sad that he would betray somebody that had served him loyally in the past, and Im angry, too. But when you get to know Rudy, you know that this is the kind of thing he does. Thats just his personality.

He should quit right now. We simply do not need someone like him as our leader.

Oh, wait....
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... i hate f%^&ing politicians
First Fred Thompson nails Michael Moore as a good prospect for a mental instituion.
Now this guy Jerry Hauer nails Giuliani for the liar he is.
Two liberals taken down a notch.
Life is good!
Of course, even if they are, I would still like to see the entire text of Mr. Hauer's memo - not one selected phrase excerpted from it.
I would also like to see what other memos he authored on this topic - I highly doubt Mr. Hauer's input on this matter consists entirely of a single memo that is one sentence long.
The NY TIMES makes use of Lloyd Grove in this instance.
Lloyd Grove was the longtime Style Page gossip columnist at the Washinton Post, who then moved on to NEW YORK Magazine.
What this shows me is that the leftwing media is hard at work eliminating the opposition.
They certainly won’t stop with Guliani.
Don’t you understand??? To some folks here, the G main is a liberal... Doesn’t matter that he reformed welfare, took on the teachers union, and cleaned up the city... to them he’s a liberal period.
DAmn...that’ll leave a mark....(chuckle)
Too funny.
New York City under Cotch and New Your City under and post G man. If you think Liberal Ideaology cleaned up NYC you are an idiot.
I'll wait for a credible source.
Several of us have discussed this very point in the past, but the Rudybots continue to overlook Giuliani’s dictatorial methods and his poor judgment.
Giulini IS a liberal. A liberal Republican, whatever the heck that means. He ran on the Liberal line.
Bratton cleaned up the city. Rudy had Bratton fired.
Hillarudy is anti Second Amendment, anti Fourth Amendment, and a proud supporter of government funded, on-demand, abortion. Classic liberal positions on key issues, IMO.
I will give Rudy some credit for refusing to meet with that racial arsonist, Al Sharpton. His oft-cited $4 billion in tax cuts: I’d love to see the details on this. I lived there, and can’t recall any, but I do recall explicitly that he kept pushing Governor Pataki to reimpose the commuter tax.
I’ll give him credit for eliminating the disfunctional Board of Education also. Don’t know about how he “took on” the teachers union. Did he just agree to a lower salary increase than what Feldman was seeking?
I see a pattern of sociopathology in many of Rudys behaviors.
My, that is persuasive!
For this clown to blame one of his subordinates is even more devastating than the idiotic decision his administration made in the first place.
