New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is prepared to spend an unprecedented $1 billion of his own $5.8 billion personal fortune for a third-party presidential campaign, Ralph Z. Hallow will report Tuesday in The Washington Times. "He has set aside $1 billion to go for it," a long-time business adviser to Mr. Bloomberg tells The Times.
"The thinking about where it will come from and do we have it is over, and the answer is yes, we can do it." The $1 billion would represent about one-fifth of Mr. Bloomberg's personal fortune. "Mike has been meeting with Ross Perot's most senior people about how they did an independent run in 1992," the Bloomberg business adviser said.
Republicans tell The Times that they are taking the Bloomberg threat seriously, while the mayor's associates say they are fielding calls from staffers for Republican Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, which the Bloomberg adviser compared to "a biplane on fire and spiraling down."

What do New Yorkers know that Rudy supporters don’t?
New Yorkers back Bloomberg over Giuliani in poll
Mon May 14, 2007 9:23AM EDT
NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City voters would prefer current Mayor Michael Bloomberg over former Mayor Rudy Giuliani for president of the United States, according to a poll published in the New York Daily News on Monday.
Forty-six percent of those polled said Bloomberg would make a better president than Giuliani while 29 percent chose Giuliani over Bloomberg, according to the poll conducted for the Daily News by Blum & Weprin Associates.
By an even greater margin — 56 percent to 29 percent — those surveyed said Bloomberg was a better mayor than Giuliani, who was widely praised for his leadership following the September 11 attacks.
The poll surveyed 503 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

I am very confused as to why Bloomberg would do this IF he has any desire to win, because that is absurd. And I’m confused why thsiu is a threat to republicans. Wouldn’t he siphon off liberal northeast and maybe Jewish votes that would otherwise go to the dems? The addition of Hagel is essentially the same effect.
We all know how well that worked out, what with ol' Ross flushing big wads of cash down the toilet to fluff his own ego, and Clinton beating Bush 41 as a result. Oh, and be sure to get their tips on picking a vice presidential candidate for your ticket.
he couldn’t do any worse than our “conservative” bush-boy.
He is a man of the Forbes 400 People !!
Don’t we already have two New York liberals running for POTUS?
What Republican apparatchik is going to risk drying up a potential cash teat by telling a billionaire he's a joke?
He’s the current mayor - maybe they’re just tired of him and want him out.
Because Rudy is now identified with fighting the WOT, and NYC is incredibly left wing and opposes the WOT even after 9-11. Just reinforces my comment that Bloomberg appeals only to those who normally vote solid dem in the NorthEast. Am I missing the threat to republicans?
Third party? Beautiful. Siphon away, Bloomie.
That's how the first Clinton got elected. I'm not sure how many GOP votes Bloomberg can siphon, though.
Let him run. Nobody outside of NY will vote for him, and we’ll never win New York in a million years anyway, so let the pathetic little fascist idiot flush his dirty, ill-gotten money down the toilet.
I must disagree. Bush is right on a few very important things, like taxes, judges, and the WOT, even if his leadership has been abysmal, his policies have often been poorly executed, and he’s afraid to fight back against the Dhimmicraps. Bloomberg is a worthless POS and an all-around disaster who’s wrong on absolutely everything, and a borderline fascist to boot.
He accomplished his goal of making sure Bush lost.
He will be to Hillary Clinton as Ross Perot was to Bill Clinton....her ticket to the White House
