Gingrich Steps Near to Decision on ’08

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, said Monday that there was a good chance he would enter the race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, but that he would not decide until after September.

“I think right now that it is a great possibility,” Mr. Gingrich said, adding, “I want to focus on what we have to do to make America successful.”

Mr. Gingrich said on “Good Morning America” on ABC-TV that he planned to hold a workshop in September on solutions for the country’s problems, after which he would decide whether to seek the presidency.

Mr. Gingrich, of Georgia, left Congress after Republicans lost seats in the 1998 midterm elections after a campaign that highlighted President Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica S. Lewinsky.

Asked about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s prospects for the White House, Mr. Gingrich said: “I think she has a very good chance of winning the presidency. I think unless Republicans are as committed to very fundamental change in Washington that they will almost certainly lose the election.”

No one else running thus far can stand toe-to-toe with the Spinners and make them look silly. He has some baggage, but so does Rudy. He needs some coaching about his intellectual superiority airs, residues of surviving leftist academia. All in all, Newt is a formidable candidate.

I think his whole “green conservatism” spiel makes him seem rather silly.

At least the Democratics are willing to wait to be hit before surrendering.

All in all, Newt is a formidable candidate.

He's an ecotard with a creepy attraction to John Kerry.

Why waste everyone’s time? The dude is more hated than anyone, so is he wanting to be a VP? I don’t get it. I don’t think he is married is he? If not, that will make him look even more creepy. Maybe his is smart, but he is just another fat loser.

The only thing he is running for is a cabinet position for either party...

"Newt is a formidable candidate."

Newt is a formidable debater.

He is also one of the great minds of conservatism.

Many of us cut our conservative teeth watching Newt (and others) on C-SPAN in the early 80's.

But Newt is weighted down with personal baggage.
If he runs the Democrats will try to associate every Republican candidate with Newt regardless of relationships to him or lack thereof. Not only with they try...but they will to a good extent succeed. Smear campaigns are one of the Democrats strong suits.

He has some baggage, but so does Rudy.

Only his baggage would fill a C-5. Only Hillary is more unliked than him, fair or not; he had his day, and now its over. Also, if he entered the race he'd probably muddle the field further , and Rudy would win. He'd probably even suck votes from Thompson (if the latter ever entered..)

I like Newt, he has some good ideas and he’s not afraid to call a spade an effing shovel. BUT HE HAS WAY TOO MUCH PERSONAL BAGGAGE and the MSM will eat him alive for it. He won’t get a pass like Hillary is getting.

As intellectual as Newt is, he would galvanize the Defeatocrats like no other candidate. EVERYONE, and I mean everyone will remember what he did to BillyJeff during the Monica investigation.

Newt will make a GREAT SecState, but POTUS, won't be happening. Newts baggage makes Guilianis look like a carryon bag. And I'd LIKE Newt to run, but he would lose the big one. Sad as that would be.

“Green Conservatism”? Is that anything like Compassionate Conservatism? If so, I want no part of it.

Here is Newt's essay on "Green conservatism." It's the same old type of thing, like "compassionate conservatism."

Just reading a few lines makes me think Newt is way out of touch. I didn't see his capitulation with Kerry but reading this is enough.

From Newt’s so-called debate with Kerry:

“Before launching into his initial speech, Gingrich endorsed the book Kerry had co-authored with his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry “This Moment on Earth.”.

“This is excellent, this is a very good book,” he said. “I would commend this book to anyone who wants to see local leadership make a difference.” Gingrich said he didn’t agree with “about 60% of it” but would urge others to “read it because it’s an example of individual local leadership against the odds.”
