Sheesh,
At ages 7 and 5 my little brother and I got caught putting .22 short rifle cartridges in a nail hole in a board (to hold ‘em) and whacking ‘em with a rock. The sitter beat the tar out of us, our mother tanned our rears when she got home from school and Dad finished the process at 5 pm after work. It wasn’t safe to come within arms length of any relative for at least a week afterwards, we felt like they were driving in from the next county to beat us! After that we got smart and pulled the rounds apart with pliers to make whizbangs out of the powder.
At 18 you’d think he would have had more sense knocked into him by now.

Did anybody ever take a whole roll of paper caps and whack em with a hammer???
What?! You mean you took them out of the box, and separated them into tiny little wimpy ROLLS before you hammered them?!!!!

The rounds themselves (especially the milspec stuff which is lacquered at the primer and the seating point of the bullet) are pretty stable. I agree, modern ammo has a long shelf life but it does not last for ever.
I recently took out some .357 ammo (Federal) to the range that had been sitting around my house for about 15 years. I had about 5 rounds out of a box that failed to fire on the first fall of the hammer.

I have some WWII vintage .303 British.
Works fine. Haven't had a misfire yet.
It's Berdan primed, so I can't reload it, so I just shoot it up. Started with about a case about 20 years ago.
