Hagel Eyes Bloomberg As Possible '08 Running Mate Republcian Sen. Hagel Says Party Has Been 'Hijacked'
(CBS) WASHINGTON The Republican Party has been "hijacked" and led away from its core values, Chuck Hagel, the Republican Senator from Nebraska, said Sunday on Face The Nation.
Hagel, who is still considering his options for the 2008 race, left open the possibility of becoming an independent and sharing a ticket with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
"I am not happy with the Republican Party today," Hagel said. "It's been hijacked by a group of single-minded almost isolationists, insulationists, power-projectors."
Hagel said he will not decide if he is going to run for president until late this summer. He did not say if he would run as a Republican or as an independent. Asked by Bob Schieffer if independent candidates would be good for the political system, Hagel said they would be.
"What America will be looking at and wanting and demanding is honest, competent, accountable leadership," he said. "We need some new, fresh, independent ideas to lead this country forward."
After dining with former New York's mayor, who is also said to be considering a run for president as an independent, Hagel said people might want to consider the two on a ticket.
"We didn't make any deals, but I think Mayor Bloomberg is the kind of individual who should seriously think about this," Hagel said. "He is the mayor of one of the greatest cities on earth. He makes that city work. That's what America wants."

Hagel and Bloomberg run? Great!!!! It will only siphon off Democrat votes. Both of them.
Just outta curiosity, what do consider an Isolationist?
“Isolationists, insulationists, and power-projectors” is almost as good as Ted Stevens’ memorable explanation of the Internet:
“The internet is not something you just dump something on. Its not a truck. Its a series of tubes. And if you dont understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.”
"Isolationists"? To the contrary, I thought we were aggressive imperialistic war-mongers, maliciously interfering in other peace-loving societies like Iraq and Afthanistan. Don't quite know what an "insulationist" is. Perhaps it protects the "power-projector" from an electrical surge.
It's a sign Hagel might be going the John Anderson independent route, though he has a very different personality and appeal from Anderson's.

R O T F L O L !!
A few people are fed up with the leftward rush of the Dims. RINOs just need to find a new home. Conservatives need to decide if they want to fight for the Constitution we have or the Constitution in Exile.
With the slow bleed of the MSM, the rise of talk radio and blogs, the Left is getting frantic and shrill to get their message out now that they are no longer the gatekeepers of information and the only moderators of public debate.
I just read a poll that stated 45% of respondents said they supported abortion and 50% thought it was morally wrong. In the wake of Katrina and VaTech, we have had an important public awakening about the practical necessity of the RKBA. Yet, even amongst conservative youth an increasing number don’t see any moral issue with cohabitation and conceiving children without the benefit of marriage.
A Left that is hell-bent on going evermore to the left benefits conservatives because it makes plain that liberalism is a mental disorder. Commentators in the MSM repeatedly complain that, with blogs and talk radio, that the society is getting “polarized”, as if the blogs and Rush Limbaugh caused it. They have the cart before the horse. Society is not “polarized”, what we are seeing is most of society waking up and finding their non-liberal voice.
That the Left now has to resort to reimposing the Fairness Doctrine by force of law (and thereby by the credible threat of armed government agents), shows just who is polarized.
May we live in interesting times.
“isolationists, insulationists, power-projectors.”
The Pat Buchanan mattress/monitor?
It is amazing how important, popular these two are, to themselves.
Name one good reason for anybody to vote for Hagel/Bloomberg over Giuliani or McCain.
And I ask that as somebody who has absolutely no desire to vote for either Giuliani or McCain...
I think Russert & Matthews are buying him drinks...
HAGEL HAS JUMPED THE SHARK!!!!
Bill
When Hagel uses the term isolationist, its generally a referance to protectionist or those that oppose free trade.
Hey Nebraska...send Hagel Schmagel packing for good next election.
