WASHINGTON - The National Guard isn't as strong as it should be because of the war in Iraq and American communities will suffer as a result, retired Air Force Gen. Melvyn Montano said Saturday.
Delivering the Democrats' weekly radio address, Montano said the strain means it will take longer for Greensburg, Kan., to recover from a devastating tornado that leveled the town a week ago.
"Crucial equipment used by the Guard for disaster relief is now in Iraq instead of standing ready to respond to crises here at home," said Montano, who was once adjutant general of the New Mexico National Guard.
"When the tornado struck Kansas last week, the Guard had half the number of Humvees and large trucks they usually would have at their disposal," Montano said. "The recovery process now will take longer."
Montano echoed Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat, who clashed with the Bush administration this week. "I don't think there is any question if you are missing trucks, Humvees and helicopters that the response (to the tornado) is going to be slower," she said Monday. "The real victims here will be the residents of Greensburg, because the recovery will be at a slower pace."
Sebelius later said the Guard was adequately equipped to handle the disaster, though possible flooding in another part of the state would have forced her to make hard choices about where to send aid.
“Also, we categorically deny Howard Dean called Governor Sebelius to give her those anti-war, anti-Bush talking points that she used so well during her 15 minutes.”
Is there NOTHING that can’t be blamed on Bush? Let’s see, hurricanes, global warming, tornadoes, racism, crime, unemployment (OK, there’s little to no unemployment, skip that one) ANYTHING?
Anybody else notice how the media has presented the recent stock market climb?
I wish someone would tell these idiots that the National Guard is a part of the military, and that the PRIMARY job of the military is to fight and win wars, NOT to serve as a disaster relief/cleanup crew.
Yes, and anyone who questions this story will get a cease & desist order from Sandler, Reiff & Young, P.C. on behalf of Howard Dean himself.
So, shut up and fall in line.
You couldn’t be more right. What do the Democrats want the military to do? Serve cocktails?
Beyond the fact that there is no "strain," do they really think people will believe that it is the job of the NG to rebuild cities destroyed by tornadoes?
“destroyed by tornadoes”
Not to mention F-5 tornadoes.
I hope everyone on the “big” thread from yesterday sees this.
Back when I was a kid I lived in Tornado Alley, was living nearby when a tornado devastated Shepherd Air Force Base. Also, once our house burned down.
I don’t remember my parents, neighbors whining for the government to come and help them. Back then churches, and neighbors helped each other.
I am wondering now (since it is going to rain today) if a flash flood comes will the govt. come and save me and my things? And can I get financial support for the next couple years like the Katrina folks who refused to evacuate and then whined about being trapped?
Liberals really are a bunch of whining babies that expect the govt. to protect them from cradle to grave.
It starts out “The national guard isn’t as strong...” The rats just targeted the National Guard for the enemy. Not the rats are my enemy.
“Is there NOTHING that cant be blamed on Bush? Lets see, hurricanes, global warming, tornadoes, racism, crime, unemployment (OK, theres little to no unemployment, skip that one) ANYTHING?”
All part of the dems playbook. Continuation of their blathering before the election. Throw everything against the wall and hope that something sticks. Even if it doesn’t stick the voters will be swayed by the constant negatives.
We can only hope for a backlash and it appears to have begun.
So when has the National Guard been the ONLY group to help when disaster strikes? Not that they don’t do a great job in helping those in need...but what about the other almost 3 million people in this country? Are we all hinging our collective hopes on the National Guard?? As I recall....many people have stepped up to the plate to help out when tragedy strikes.
Churches and civic groups have all come to help out in times of need. Putting the onus on the National Guard is totally unfair. What makes what they are doing in Iraq to secure the safety of the American people any less important than cleaning up after a natural disaster? Both are required. There are millions of able bodied people here who can and do fill in the gaps when help is needed. The National Guard are in a place where they are needed most, trained to do the job they have been called to. The Church here in America should also be ready to support those who have lost everything. Before the welfare state was instituted, it was the church that stood up and came to the rescue...not the government, not the national guard...but the church.
The National Guard is great! They do a wonderful job, but when the resources are thin and stretched as they have been since the war began...it is even more important to rally the homefront when disaster strikes and leave the NG to do what they have been called to do.

One more question...what on earth did the American people do before the Humvee??? It’s a wonder we’ve made it this far. /s
As a matter of fact, yes. I did not search for a source but I remember reading that uniformed military did in fact serve cocktails to White House guests of the Clintons. Hillary made that part of their assigned duties.
When generals lie there is trouble in the land.
We’re Americans. We are not allowed to talk about this. And as far as the comments in reply #17 I didn’t say that about Democrat Hillary. I didn’t do it and if I did it was just a slip up. I know my new place in the Rat’s Amerika — oops, I didn’t do that. . . .
