CNN Poll Finds Majority Say They're Pro-Life, Abortion Key 2008 Issue

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll conducted by Opinion Research Corporation for CNN earlier this month find that a majority of Americans say they are pro-life when it comes to the issue of abortion. The survey also shows abortion is a key issue for the 2008 presidential campaign and that pro-life voters are more resolute than abortion advocates.

When asked to self-identify as "pro-life" or "pro-choice" on the issue of abortion, 50 percent of Americans call themselves pro-life while just 45 percent say otherwise.

Another two percent said they didn't know what the terms meant and two percent more felt they were a combination of the two.

Asked whether certain political issues were important to their vote for president next year, a majority said abortion was important and abortion was thought to be more pertinent than stem cell research.

Of the 1,028 adults conducted by telephone on May 4-6, 51 percent said abortion was important with 27 percent saying it is extremely important and 24 percent saying it's very important.

Another 24 percent said abortion is moderately important and only 24 percent said abortion is not that important to their vote.

That split was higher than the percentage who said stem cell research is a pertinent issue with 48 percent saying it is important and only 20 percent saying it's extremely important. A higher 28 percent said stem cell research was just moderately important.

CNN's poll also indicated that Americans who are pro-life show more passion and intensity about their views than those who back abrotion -- translating into more support for pro-life canddiates.

"People who describe themselves as pro-life are twice as likely to say the issue will be extremely important to them than people who call themselves pro-choice. Abortion-rights opponents have intensity on their side," CNN said about the intensity question, which it did not post in its poll summary information.

The poll also asked Americans about their thoughts on the recent Supreme Court ruling upholding the federal ban on partial-birth abortions.

It found that 66 percent think "government should make this procedure illegal" while just 28 percent favor keeping partial-birth abortions legal.

That compares favorably to a similar question CNN asked in October 2003 when the split on making partial-birth abortions illegal was 68-25 percent.

“Looks like CNN will be looking for new pollsters soon.”

There was a thread on here two or three days ago about about the CNN pollster, a MAJOR Hillary fan. He’s donated the max to her campaign, and his website shows photos of him, his family and the Clintons.

THAT should be cause for cnn to change, but the won’t.

I also have a recollection that Gallup had been cnn’s pollster for a long time, but Gallup didn’t like being tied into only one cable network and did not renew its contract (which would not allow Gallup to poll for or report on any other network).

Seriously? Why was CNN hiring them if they dictated everything? I'm assuming so CNN would appear that they were being fair and balanced.

Very strange! Accoding to most polls most persons do not want Roe overturned. I am sure CNN would not jimmy the poll for a pro life bias. I wonder what gives.

2% don’t know what the terms mean? What rock have they been hiding under?

Thanks for ping on this important matter.

A question that needs an answer, talk is cheap.

What commitment do life voters want from a candidate other than a verbal pro-life affirmation?

What? I heard Rudy say the other day that polls show 60% agree with him that abortion was just fine the way it is. Surely a politician with FVS (Floating Values Syndrome) wouldn’t make that up!
***Seems like a good place to bump the thread.

I think the primary reason Gallup walked away from CNN was because of CNN’s spiraling ratings due to the growing popularity of the Fox News Channel and the internet.

I'm not sure which category above that Giuliani would fall into. He thinks he's a combination of pro-life and pro-abortion, but his statements prove that he doesn't know what the term "pro-life" even means.

They should probably use the AP style rules. Especially on CNN, and say anti-abortion and abortion rights. It would make things a lot clearer. It isn’t like anyone who is pro-life really has a problem saying they are anti-abortion.

According to my poll, and I knock on thousands of doors, life is the big issue. That is the issue that comes up at the door more often than any other. They are not one issue voters, but that one is a big motivating one.

And many are very dissapointed at how politicians pander, but won't actually make changes. That is a big reason we lost in 2006.

They want the "real deal".

That is a great question, and a critically important one.

I’ll get back ASAP.

Thanks. Of interest is that Romney and Giuliani have been outed for their donations to Planned Parenthood. I wonder which of the other candidates have donated to pro-life groups. Perhaps someone has that research capability.

This is consistent with past polls in 2003 and 2004 showing 52%-54% are pro-life. A couple points could safely be added to this latest poll to offset its CNN origin. Most Americans hate abortion - remember that next time someone implores you to abandon your convictions to vote for Giuliani on the grounds he is somehow more mainstream.
