House Rejects Nine-Month Iraq Withdrawal

(AP) WASHINGTON The Democratic-controlled House defeated legislation Thursday to require the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq within nine months, then pivoted to a fresh challenge of President Bush's handling of the unpopular war.

The vote on the nine-month withdrawal measure was 255-171.

On a day of complex maneuvering, Democrats said they would approve legislation funding the war on an installment plan and Bush said he would veto it. But the president, under pressure from lawmakers in both parties, coupled his threat with an offer to compromise on a spending bill that sets standards for the Iraqi government.

"Time's running out, because the longer we wait the more strain we're going to put on the military," said Bush, who previously had insisted on what he termed a "clean" war funding bill.

Despite Bush's ability to sustain his vetoes in the House -- as demonstrated last week -- critics of the war insisted on challenging him anew.

"This war is a terrible tragedy and it is time to bring it to an end," said Rep. James McGovern, leading advocate of the bill to establish a nine-month withdrawal timetable. "For four long, deadly years, this administration and their allies in Congress have been flat wrong about Iraq," said the Massachusetts Democrat.

Republicans argued that a withdrawal would be disastrous.

No the majority of the American people just want the war to go away. They are uninformed, ignorant of what is going on and the reason the Democrats are getting away with this is the support for the war is gone because the main stream media and the Democrats would rather humilate and destroy the president even if it means destroying national security. Th rest of us are intelligent enough to know we can’t afford to lose this one. The ones who know we have to stop terrorist now not wonder later why they were able to explode a nuclear bomb in one of largest cites.
Unfortunely most of Amercians aren’t going to blame Democrats for their lack of support. They will blame the President because he won’t bow to surrendering in Iraq. And now we have Republicans that are setting their own timeline of September to jump ship because they are more concerned about keeping their jobs then protecting this nation. Both parties make me sick. I am afraid for our county. President Bush can’t stand alone and win.

“The Democratic-controlled House defeated legislation”

How do you defeat what you are supporting and pushing through.

This CBS is really wacked.

no joke. So have Americans during every previous war.

Vietnam was the only war when we just quit though we left a bloodbath behind. That isn't going to happen with Islamofascists. They are here already. Why are the Dems so stupid about this?

a fresh challenge of President Bush's handling of the unpopular war.

I’ve read “unpopular war” at least twice today, each time from the liberal press. This war is very popular with me. We lost 100,000 US soldiers in WWI, 400,000 in WWII, 33,000 in Korea, and 55,000 in Vietnam before Congress cut off funds to South Vietnam. Our casualties in this war are 3,000 on September 11th, 2001, and less than 4,000 subsequently. This is one of the best wars ever, and deserves to be the most popular.

Why are the Dems so stupid about this?

They are dominated today by boomers who protested Vietnam, or at least sympathized with the protesters. They have twisted the history in their own minds so they are convinced they were "right" about Vietnam and right to force the withdrawal and defeat. It is a core part of their identity.

I watched demonstrations after the Iraq invasion and they were dominated by boomers reliving their adolescence.

They now identify George Bush as Richard Nixon, so that anything they are told about the islamofascist menace to the U.S. and the West they dismiss as "lies."

Their way of thinking is a completely closed, self-feeding system; it is impenetrable to facts or logic.

I’m disappointed with Ron Paul also.

He is a longtime libertarian. In most ways he is ultraconservative. He is the kind of guy who could say (may have said) “no wars unless they are declared by Congress.” Sure, that is the Constitution. But right now he is just a tool of the defeatocrats.

Yeah, I hear you on his conservatism but he's in lockstep with the RATS on Iraq, I just can't abide that, there's too much at stake.

The Defeatocrats don't know when to stop.

Why should they stop? Defeatism is in the Marxist Dimocrat's blood. It runs thicker than blood. Their hate for Bush, and everything conservative and American runs thicker than blood.

The Democrats are the Party of Hate. They truly hate conservatives and will give no quarter on any conservative issues. They fully intend to destroy the GOP.

"Now is not the time to signal retreat and surrender. How could this Congress walk away from our men and women in uniform," said Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif.

Last sentence of the article about the legislation defeated by the Democrat-controlled House.
