Giuliani Plans to Publicly Embrace Abortion Rights [Rudy declares war on conservatism]
New York Times ^ | May 10, 2007 | By ADAM NAGOURNEY and MARC SANTORA

Posted on 05/09/2007 7:17:06 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

After months of giving ambiguous signals on abortion, Rudolph W. Giuliani is planning to offer a forthright affirmation of his support for abortion rights in public forums, television appearances and interviews in the coming days, despite potential consequences among some conservative voters already wary of his views, aides said yesterday.

At the same time, Mr. Giuliani’s campaign — seeking to accomplish the unusual task of persuading the Republican Party to nominate an abortion rights supporter as its presidential candidate — is eyeing a path to the nomination that would try to de-emphasize the early states in which abortion opponents wield a great deal of influence. Instead they would focus on the so-called mega-primary of Feb. 5, in which voters in states like California, New York and New Jersey are likely to be more receptive to Mr. Giuliani’s social views than voters in states like Iowa and South Carolina. They said that approach became more appealing after Florida, another state they said would be receptive to Mr. Giuliani, voted last week to move its primary forward to the end of January.

The shift in emphasis by Mr. Giuliani comes as his campaign has struggled to deal with the fallout from the first Republican presidential candidate debate in which he gave a halting and apparently contradictory responses to questions about his support for abortion rights. Mr. Giuliani’s aides were concerned both because it opened him up to a new round of criticism from abortion critics — who have never been happy with the prospect of a Republican presidential candidate who supports abortion rights — while threatening to undercut his image as a tough-talking iconoclast who does not equivocate on tough issues.

Good. Now that he’s out in the open we can get rid of him and the Log Cabin RINOs who support him.

I don’t know. If Rudy, Mccain, Hagel, etc. can be Republicans I guess anyone can. That’s why they’re called RINOs. As for the Catholic thing, I can’t judge Rudy on that since my own Catholicism is a thing of the past.

>>>>>87%-91% of the electorate who don't think a candidate's opinion on abortion is a deal breaker

What falsehoods. You keep posting this same crapola, in an attempt to lend credence to Rooty`s pro-abortion, gun grabbing, gay rights backing, amnesty supporting, big govt liberal candidacy.

A liberal is a liberal, is a liberal! He sure wasn't able to cover up his liberal agenda for very long. This is going to backfire on him. He has angered more people than he considered. He just kissed his chance of becoming President goodbye!

>>>>>You must have me confused with someone else.

Not at all. I remember you from the whining you did on the Bug Zapper thread, and have been reading some of your more recent posts too.

>>>>Being realistic about a candidate's viability is hardly making THE case for anyone's candidacy.

From the conservative perspective of this forum, what you're doing is skirting the issues in Giuliani's favor. It is the goal of FR to knock off Rooty. Your goal seems to be promoting his candidacy.

“Giuliani puts himself in place to win a good chunk of the untouched 25-40% of the party (depending on your belief in the polling) that is Pro-Choice. With 9 guys splitting the Pro-Life vote, and one guy taking a majority of the rest, he solidifies a solid base for the Primary. We’ll see though, the fact that he botched this delivery kind of negates the benefit.”

If you believe that you are smoking something or you think there is 25-40% of the party that is pro-abortion, pro-queer agenda, and anti-gun.

I doubt there is 5%. His position on all the issues is so screwed up that he has zero chance as a Republican.

I’m hoping he is as “candid” about his disdain of the 2nd Amendment and those who would dare to embrace it...

Come on rooty, TESTIFY!

“Roger-That,,,What else could it be at this point in time ??”

Well, if I wanted to float a balloon, that’s how I’d do it. If he does, it’ll be a strategic move where he thinks he can sacrifice a huge chunk of the pro-life vote for more fence riders. He lost the initiative and wants it back (ha ha). Sorry, ain’t gettin’ it back!

Having poll numbers of 30% that are falling is not what I would call a "strong lead."

Who does Giuliani appeal to, besides celebrity fetishists who fall for one-note ("remember 9/11") appeals. Most of America has moved on, and doesn't give a damn how many squeegee men Rudy ticketed. In fact, they would say that the fact that New York had squeegee men in the first place indicated who uncivilized and unAmerican the place is.

Well, if he really intends to "declare war" on conservatism, and adopt an "in your face" attitude about abortion, he's dead meat. He might have finessed the issue if he had wanted to and been clever, but this sounds like a suicide dive and "going out in a blaze of glory."

Agreed.

...is eyeing a path to the nomination that would try to de-emphasize the early states in which abortion opponents wield a great deal of influence.

Will he do the same with respect to gun control? Special rights for gays? Amnesty for illegal aliens? Where will it end?

Rudy wants to turn the Republican Party over to liberals. Fugghedaboutit, Rudy! Ain't gonna happen!

California ranks highest with approximately 575 abortions for every 1,000 live births; Idaho ranks lowest with only 36 abortions per 1,000. The CDC tracks some cities individually as well as in their state totals: New York City gets the prize with 767 abortions per 1,000, with Washington, D.C., not far behind at 706

The horror!!! This is worse then Iraq's death rate and Iraq is a war zone.

How come Peloser and the rest of the demorats haven't come up with a plan for US withdraw from the USA?

The Demorats are the party of cut and run. They like to come up with these kinds of plans.

You would think they would have us 'retreating' to France by now.

California kills a full third of all the human beings conceived in that state. In New York, they kill nearly half of the human beings conceived there. And the rest of the human race is supposed to be OK with that?

0% Chance? Really? Have you seen the polls?

Plus you live in a Blue State, you know how many RINOS there are out there. If he chooses to be their man, he can win. (In my state at least, there are more Pro-Choice Republicans than Pro-Life ones, there are more Pro-Gun Control Republicans than Pro-2nd, though not more Pro-Queer than Pro-Marriage) Its scary how many of them are still out there. But in a way we still need them, Conservatives only make up like 40%, you need 50% to win. (Though Im not saying we should Run RINOs)
