Sharpton: Prior to '78, Mormons Weren't 'Real Worshippers of God'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

In going on Paula Zahn's CNN show this evening, was Al Sharpton's goal to quell the controversy surrounding his comments about Mormonism, or to inflame it? If the former, he failed miserably. If the latter, he succeeded admirably.

Let's recall Sharpton's original statement, that in going on the Zahn show he presumably was seeking to explicate. Debating Christopher Hitchens recently, Sharpton said:

"And as for the one Mormon running for office, those that really believe in God will defeat him anyway. So don't worry about that. That's a temporary, that's a temporary situation."

Discussing those comments on "Paula Zahn Now" this evening during the 8 PM EDT half-hour, Sharpton and Zahn discussed the fact that until 1965 [according to CNN], or 1978, according to Sharpton, blacks were not accorded full status in the Mormon church. That engendered the following exchange.

View video here.

CNN HOST PAULA ZAHN: Prior to 1965 -

THE REVEREND AL SHARPTON: I think it's 1978.

ZAHN: Well, our researchers are using a different date. But prior to that date, when blacks were finally considered equals within the church, did you find the Mormon church racist?

SHARPTON: I think that that's by self-definition. If prior to '65, '78, whenever it was, they did not see blacks as equal, I do not believe that as real worshippers of God, because I do not believe that God distinguishes between people. That's not bigotry, that's responding to their bigotry.

By the time Sharpton quits digging this whole, he’ll be so far down he’s gonna need that danged bullhorn to be heard.

Yet again, scumbag Sharpton proves he is a pig, a miserable excuse for a man, and a generic, text book liberal slimeball -— and this POS dares to consider himself a “man of God”... talk about living lies.

I first saw this jackass on the local NY stations almost 20 years ago, polluting the airwaves with his hoax, scandal, and slander with the fake rape of Tawana Brawley. I thought him a flash-in-the-pan, a two bit huckster who would be relegated to the dustbin of bad news history. But here he is, still getting face time on “respectable” networks, when if he was ignored, if he had no platform to speak from, he would be worth less than the paper that calls him “Reverend”.

Do you read me Paula Zahn? Do you read me Sean Hannity?

Hypocrite. Sharpton has NEVER used this terminology to describe the white-devil-hating Nation of Islam.

...I do not believe that God distinguishes between people...

Has this guy ever read the Old Testament?

23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.
24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
Exodus 23:23-24

So, I guess, in "Reverend" Sharpton's view, that makes God a racist. But then, he sees racism everywhere, doesn't he?

Trying to dig through the Sharptonism...

From a google search, it looks like the book of Mormon says that that the skin of the evil tribe was turned dark as punishment for their wickedness. It looks like policies resulting from this passage didn’t change until the 60’s.

Does anybody have first hand info? Its hard to decipher from the net - particularly when so many web pages use South Park as a source.

BTW, I’m in no mood to throw stones over this, we Southern Baptists have our own racial demons to make up for.

Gads! Is there something in the waters of original Freeperdom that makes the old-timers viciously clever, or cleverly vicious?
