Mitt Romney: No One Would Care If I Went From Pro-Life to Pro-Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he's getting tired of the questions about his shift a few years ago from supporting to opposing abortion. In a television interview last night, he said he wouldn't be barraged with so many questions if he had switched from pro-life to pro-abortion.

The comments came during a Monday night interview on the Fox News Channel program "Hannity and Colmes."

Romney has frequently explained how he became pro-life a few years ago after having to deal with the issue of embryonic stem cell research as governor -- after campaigning as a pro-abortion candidate on previous occasions.

"What I find interesting is, had I been pro-life and then changed to pro-choice, no one would ask the question," the former Massachusetts governor said.

He added: "But if you go the other direction, as I have and as Ronald Reagan did and (former Illinois Rep.) Henry Hyde and (former president) George Herbert Walker Bush, it's like the media can't get enough of it: 'Oh, well, why did you change?' "

Romney talked about his abortion views during the Republican presidential debate last week.

Asked whether "the day that Roe v. Wade is repealed" would "be a good day for Americans" Romney replied, "Absolutely."

The former governor was also asked about his position change -- something that presumably led to the Fox News comments.

"I've always been personally pro-life, but for me there was a great question about whether or not government should intrude in that decision. And when I ran for office, I said I’d protect the law as it was, which is effectively a pro-choice position," Romney explained.

"About two years ago when we were studying cloning in our state, I said, look, we have gone too far; it’s a brave new world mentality that Roe v. Wade has given us; and I change my mind," he added.

"And I said I was wrong and changed my mind and said I'm pro-life. And I'm proud of that and I won't apologize to anybody for becoming pro-life," he concluded.

He claims to want to overturn McCain-Feingold, but in fact, he supported even more draconian attacks on the First Amendment back during and before its passage.

Coincidentally, you and Bonaparte seem to suffer the same problem of imbalance. Some reading of some more balanced material, might be a good remedy for you too. : )

Say, by the way, what is Mormonism anyway?

Let's ask Sandra Tanner, foremost living scholar on the subject.

Just click on the photo to load the interview.

It's really very educational.

His socialized medicine scheme is exactly that, a government intervention in the private sector that is already melting down, no matter how hard he tries to spin it. And it includes taxpayer-funded abortions, no matter how many of his hacks come here and try and obscure it. Hillary, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and even James Carville have all praised it.

Balanced?

I ate a balanced diet today, does that count?

Nice try.

Romney, in your campaign-derived documents above, is quoted several times as mouthing empty words about families, and how much they need a mom and a dad. Are you aware that his administration declared two homosexual men to be the “adoptive parents of the year”?

Unfortunately, it is the supermaster of half truth's, and his sidekick Bonaparte, who should be ashamed.

I've had enough "fun" for one evening. It's beddy-bye time boys. I think I hear your mommies calling.

Whoa, Teri! How did that little tidbit in 186 get left out of your rapturous praise of Romney in post 166?

The candidate of your choice picks two homosexuals as Parents of the Year!

How "inclusive"!

Just the kind of "family values" we want to see promoted by our President!

My Mom passed on two years ago.

She's not calling me at all anymore.

You shouldn’t do that on FR! You really shouldn’t. The truth really comes out around here. People with memories can recall unbelievable stuff about the past.

His name should appear on the screen at some point. I think it's something like Sean McCready. He's a great interviewer and really nice guy.

Glad you like the program!

"Sure miss her."

Know what you mean. You and I just found out the price of having a great Mom. Not a day goes by, not one.

I found it ... Shawn McCraney. This program aired Jan 8, 2007. Shawn is quite knowledgeable. They are taking phone calls in the portion now on.

I hear you. I'll be watching quite a bit more of his show. It beats anything on TV by a country mile.

Of course, this interview only scratches the surface. Tanner's been studying Mormon history and doctrine for 47 years.

Her website, Utah Lighthouse Ministry, is crammed with information. Just click on her homepage links to "topical index" or the mind-blowing "online resources" link.

This lady is a powerhouse!

Do you know if Shawn has done a show on embryonic stem cell research, cloning, and abortion? I find a paucity on these issues to help Christians be really pro-life.

No, I don’t know whether he’s covered that one. I’m going to look into it though. If I can find his video archive, I’ll give you a heads up.

That makes his later assertions very believable that he was horrified by the misinterpretation of the health exception within a year of the bill’s passage.

Oh. So his horror was so profound he couldn't speak out for seven years, until after he was no longer governor and in a position to do anything?

As for Mr. Romney, if he’d stop trying to put himself in a better light by lying about Mr. Reagan, it’d do wonders for his credibility.

Romney simply pointed out that Republicans going pro-life catch press flack. So you believe that the press loved Reagan, never questioned his change to pro-life?

But stop trying to whitewash his pro-choice record and statements. He's a good man and I believe that some of his pro-life conversion is sincere. But his past is his past and you shouldn't try to overcome his weaknesses on core issues by lying about his positions, past or present.

I thoroughly agree.

You become pro-life when you go public. None of this "I'm personally this but politically that".

That loses points with me. I don't want candidates who take credit for being something privately but the opposite publicly.

It's like they're demanding an award for hypocrisy.
