Thompson wins Washington GOP straw poll
Sound Politics ^ | 07 May 2007 | Stefan Sharkansky

Not that this necessarily means a whole lot, but it's worth noting. According to the official state party report on Saturday's annual statewide auction dinner:

Fred Thompson was the runaway winner, taking half of all votes cast. Clearly the other candidates have some work to do to match the support that former Sen. Thompson is receiving from grassroots activists. ... Fred Thompson 50% Mitt Romney 16% Rudy Giuliani 15% Duncan Hunter 10% John McCain 5% Tom Tancredo 1% Tommy Thompson 1% Mike Huckabee 1% Newt Gingrich <1%

Good points:) But...let’s thinks about this- which ONE of the current dems in the race would be comfortable writing pieces that tell their beliefs, ideas and opinions this way?

...waiting...

...still waiting...

Or to be quite frank, which of the other Republicans would do the same!

Some of the second tier candidates could be doing exactly what Fred is doing and seeing a lot of success with it. Apparently, they either don’t have the ability or just aren’t interested enough.

"Thompson/Shutterspeed 08! :D"
ROFLMAO!

I'm afraid that Fred and I are both Tennesseans currently living in Virginia. I'm afraid my candidacy would do nothing to benefit the ticket electorally and must as a matter of conscience withdraw my name from consideration.
After all, as I have also learned from the anti-Fred, clairvoyant, Poll-Trolls, Fred gains nothing in the electoral college so he is sure to lose. (you can't see it, but they always make me cry when they say that)
Furthermore, as an evil military contractor, currently working in Iraq on counter-ied intel - Like Newt - my negatives would be WAY to high.
at least that's what I read on Dick Morris' website and am pretending like are my own opinions. /very heavy sarc off

Nice to see Duncan Hunter up near the top. Hunter may not have the advantage of being an actor but he is clearly the best candidate in the race and it’s good to see that though many would like to silence him and pretend he doesn’t exist and not want people to learn of him, he continues to do very well in these straw polls.

Great post. And there does seem to want there to be an anointment of Fred Thompson. He may be an acceptable conservative but I don’t think he has proven himself or shown himself in the past as being a particularly effective or stand out Senator, other than being one of the few Hollyweird Republicans.

For all of Fred’s supposed greatness, he was rather lackluster in his speech the other day. That doesn’t bode well for someone in the acting profession and with these supposed strengths. And, yes, Hunter is by far the better candidate. But he does not have a role on Law and Order and that somehow predominates with these people! It’s all about campaigning and I find it interesting that Fred has not subjected himself to it and apparently doesn’t like it to begin with. I think Hunter shows more spark and a combat vet is more likely to take on with people in a general election than an actor, especially in these times.

Yes, well it is you Thompson people who are bashing Hunter in trying to derail any chance that people actually consider him and who is the better candidate by saying the same old, same old BS “he is unelectable”, “Who?”. Sorry to burst your bubble but Fred is only getting this attention because HE IS AN ACTOR and you cannot honestly say that he was a standout Senator and the best possible candidate. And if McCain was so wrong and had a movement against him due to his campaign finance that was the initial panic of not having him as candidate, why does Thompson(his good friend and ardent supporter of that campaign finance) get to sail by?? Thompson is more of the same and I frankly do not think he has the right to just be anointed like people attempted to do with George Allen. He doesn’t warrant being made a deity.

It is very convenient that he NOW disavows campaign finance reform. And he IS very good friends with McCain and it is most likely McCain would get a prominent position in a Thompson presidency IF he actually could get elected. It’s funny that Thompson has always played the same bipartisan BS like McCain to begin with and here people think we need this man who has not shone in the Senate and his main claim to fame is that he is one of the few Republicans in Hollyweird and that supposedly assures that the public outside the GOP will somehow be impressed and that makes him electable! No friggin way.

I believe I read that cable programming isn’t affected by the rule, but if you are referring to network reruns, that may be a point.

Guess what? People can SAY they feel he’s unelectable and that isn’t bashing. There is no “right to support” in the Constitution. You Hunter people don’t get to force the rest of us to support him. If we want to “anoint” Thompson(Which isn’t what’s happening), we’ll do it. Deal with it.

I absolutely CAN say that Fred was a standout, otherwise I never would have noticed him 12 years ago, when I was living in California. He isn’t getting support on this forum because he’s an actor. He is getting support from the grassroots because of his positions on the issues. He may pull in some clueless people because he’s an actor, but that’s a GOOD thing.

And don’t forget about appearing on gay porn shows in drag - for “charity”, of course.

Frankly, Thompson wasn’t very good. That kind of speech is not going to electrify the public outside the GOP and they are not going to be starstruck by an actor most don’t even know is one. How is Thompson at campaigning? I hear he doesn’t like to campaign. That ought to show really well in a general election as well.

Well I can very well say what I do about Fred Thompson. WHO IS HE? WHAT HAS HE DONE? You will be hearing that from the public outside of the starstruck same old nitwits, spineless Republican front. Fred is more of the same and I don’t want to trust someone who was stupid enough to support campaign finance reform to begin with.

Good. We don’t want you to support Thompson, considering how your vitriolic “support” for Duncan Hunter drives people away from him.

Dude. You're presenting a beautiful example of what I was "sarc-ing" about.

I like Duncan, he's great. But I like Fred better.

I saw your first Duncan post and I'm thinking "cool, he likes Duncan, that's great". Then you morph into another paranoid Fred basher spewing the same old crap us "fred heads" are laughing at.

Yes - we're laughing at you.

I make an absolute point to not bash any of the other good conservatives out there. I like Huckabee, Hunter, Newt, That former VA governor who's name escapes me, I even think Romney is alright. I even voted for Keyes back in the day. But I like Fred - a lot of us do. How does that hurt you?

Chill out.
