Rudy Giuliani portrayed himself as the heir to Ronald Reagan at the first Republican debate last night, talking tough on terrorism - but struggling to present a clear and consistent position on abortion.
Giuliani, who strongly supported abortion rights during his eight years as mayor, said he would not object to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision affirming abortion.
"It would be OK to repeal it," said Giuliani, who is courting key anti-abortion voters in the GOP primaries.
But he then added that "it would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as a precedent" - meaning upholding Roe vs. Wade.
"I think the court has to make that decision - and then the country can deal with it."
Giuliani was the only one of the 10 candidates onstage at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., to say it would be OK if Roe were upheld.

Exactly as all of us here predicted to the former FReepers who committed Guilianicide on the basis that only Guiliani could beat Hillary...
Men don’t want brassy women; they like their women soft, their whisky hard and their leaders tempered like pure steel springs ready to pounce at any time.
Hillary fancies herself as a liberal version of the Iron Lady wrapped in the cloak of Joan of Arc riding a white horse up the Capitol steps at the head of a parade.
Too much, too fast.
Rudy... we had Ronald Reagan as a President.
YOU are NO Ronald Reagan.
I agree. People know Rudi because his city was attacked, TWICE! But most Americans do not yet know his LIBERAL record and when they do that is going to make a difference here in the Midwest. Outside of what happened on 911 people don’t even know who Rudi is except for the name recognition. If the republicans decided on Rudi for their man, well we are in trouble. And if the dems go with Hitlery they are nuts, too many people hate that woman. That includes demonics and republicans, men and women. But if it’s Obama I am afraid he could win just so the standard politician, who people are disgusted with, doesn’t get it.There has to be some serious money behind this guy! He’s too inexperienced and vulnerable to be POTUS. Who would be calling the shots if he won? But then again if it looks like he could win I am sure Hitlery might take things into her own hands and see to it that he doesn’t win. Things might just get very interesting!lol
Rudy would have continued to have a great reputation if he had not run for President. Now, in addition to every comment he made in public on any issue he will take a beating on his many personal peccadillos. He has to fade in the stretch.
